The sphenoid bone (/ˈsfiːnɔɪd/;^[1][2] from Greek sphenoeides, "wedgelike") is an unpaired cranial bone situated at the front middle of the skull in front of the temporal bone and basilar part of the occipital bone. The sphenoid bone is one of the seven bones that articulate to form the orbit. Its shape somewhat resembles that of a butterfly or bat with its wings extended.

In both Exodus and 1 Kings it describes two winged creatures that were placed above the covenant box:

 

"Each had two wings. Two of their outstretched wings touched each other in the middle of the room and the other two wings touched the walls"

 

The sphenoid bone is bat-shaped, and looking at it face on it appears to have two pairs of wings.

 

The pituitary is housed within the sphenoid structure and is suspended above the cube shaped bone- just as the winged creatures are placed over the square altar.

It was a common motif with the Egyptians and wasn't an angel, it was Isis.

Like most of esoteric Judaism (as they had non or even a Jewish nation back then) they lifted stuff from Egypt and Mesopotamia ( an 'arc' with the poles to carry and the rings to put them through and the 'biblical' details is really no more than an Egyptian portable shrine, many of the gods had them

Remember that the Egyptian 'Jews' fell out with the locals due to their insistence on making an 'improper sacrifice' ... in Egypt, their system was just a variation on common themes and did not take the later 'ownership' it achieved until after they left Egypt and came back from the Babylonian diaspora.
