Cool places members live

Recommended Posts

I was the its cold outside thread, and some people mentioned where they lived. One members talked about the Appalachian Highlands. That sounds really cool. I'd love to hear more about it.

Other members live in some interesting locations. It'd be interesting to hear about those too.

I'm in Chicago. Its a nice city, great lake front for walks and biking, world class museums and galleries. Excellent food culture too, though it lacks the food cart tradition of other comparable cities.

I'm hoping people will talk about whats great in there neck of the woods. Cause its a big world and we just don't see enough of it and when we do, we often miss out on quiet gems.

We know that I live in Florida. But I am in the Northeast area so I still get Winters, very short Springs and Autumns. As the crow flies, 38 miles from the ocean. Not really in Florida vacation land so there are no tourists to jack up the cost of living.

Nothing really special in my area except maybe the Jacksonville Jaguars if you are into football.

Jacksonville's original name was Cowford and it still lives up to the name. I normally refer to it as being part of South Georgia.

But when I was ready to retire from the Army this was the best of all possible worlds for me.

I moved to Ireland 21 years ago.

Ireland has this -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newgrange

this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guinness

and this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sheep

oh, and not forgetting this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cliffs_of_Moher

its a lovely country, very green, and if you like plenty of rain all year, its a perfect retirement destination.

and... Obama has ancestry here, if that means anything. Who doesn't, come to think of it.

:D

I live at 7000 ft, close to the crest of the Andes mountain range in Southern Ecuador, also a couple of miles from a national park with the greatest biodiversity on Earth. It's hard to throw a rock around here without hitting a 'medicinal' plant.

I currently live in the Phoenix metro area. It's got some great metro hiking areas like South Mountain and Piestewa Peak. The finest cigar factory in the world was in Scottsdale until about two months ago; I cried the day after we had to tear down the factory and move everything out. Also the poetry community is quite exceptional.

Curious. Why was the factory torn down?

Due to certain considerations in the relationship I have with the cigar factory's owner I'm not really at liberty to discuss it.
