Nungali Posted January 31, 2014 That's pretty cute!  Its cute when it happens to someone else.  Much less cute is the native antichinus ... they eat mice ... once I opened the cupboard and (like bad porno) I could not figure out what I was looking at ... I knew it was yucky .... took a closer look and it was a mouse with the top of its head missing and its brain gone ... apparently, for an antichinus that is the best bit
3bob Posted January 31, 2014 ...if high level monks, nuns and swami's at the monastery use cats for their mice problem then I imagine you can to. Our one little cat takes care of all the mice for us and several homes nearby. Cats are even smarter than mice and also interesting. Don't forget mice can carry disease into your home like hanta virus which is deadly.

I know a few folks (including my old roomate) who tried to train their cat to eat, or at least hunt mice, no such luck lol.  From what I recall, over on the island in a log cabin, we just gave up eventually.... though seeing a rat dead in the bathtub one morning was rather unpleasant. We never used poison or bait, so not quite sure how that happened. My roomate's cooking was pretty bad sometimes...

Cats that are well fed will still kill mice, rats, etc and oftentimes bring them home to show off to their people. That's likely how the rat got in the tub. Nungali Posted January 31, 2014 Cats (here) also kill endangered endangered and rare little marsupials , birds and even reptiles. So for me, I am more likely to hunt the cat than the rat. ... BaguaKicksAss Posted January 31, 2014 In all seriousness, if you are even questioning whether you should off the mice or not, obviously not, especially since you are moving soon . Though if you want to save the little miceys from the next occupants ,seal up all the holes...
Songtsan Posted February 1, 2014 I know that it is attachment motivated to kill the mice - for I am attached to having counters free of mouse poops, free of bags of food with holes in them, etc. - so it is selfishness that motivates me to kill them in the end. Â What a crazy world we live in - a place where we must kill countless beings as a way of life.

its true - but sometimes I wonder whether or not this is actually a limbo of sorts we live in which decides our next journey...what if all of our choices lead up to a result in the 'afterlife' which is based on how cruel we were in this life? Guess I will find out eventually...
Stosh Posted February 1, 2014 Starting from What If...you could follow up with absolutely Anything! It just isnt a reasonable basis to decide what to do with the life you know you have right now. You cant make any plan at all. The one reasonable thing is to live this one well. Â Â
Nungali Posted February 1, 2014 Confusion comes about when we think we are 'better" than the little mousey that ate the other species of little mousey's brain out and left the rest behind.  I reminded myself of a story ( )  A woman visitor is admiring my oasis and attracted wildlife. I am feeding a feral pet butcher bird   Her: "Why does he have that hook on his beak?"  Me: "he is a butcher bird, he catches little critters and wedges them in a tree branch and uses the hook to strip the meat off and eat it - hence the name.  Her: "That's horrible ... and so are you for saying that!"  Me: "Huh ??? "  Her, "I cant believe such a beautiful little creature would do something like that! "  Me : ........

I nearly missed this ... how rude if none of our fellow county men reply ...  We are a strange land (while Mal is doing Tai Chi in the centre of a cyclone at Townsville, I am further down the coast with a jumper on doing shorin-ryu, while still further down in Canberra its 40 degrees C and people are buying fire works and porno - and NOT for the Chinese New Year).  WE do have lizards and birds that eat mice ( often I will find gliders tails on the lawn in the morning - Boobrook owls swoop down and snatch them and snip the tails off before eating them - too furry , not enough meat) BUT we tend not to have large carnivorous lizards in the house or cupboards ... I could stuff an owl in the cupboard but I think that would hamper its swooping ability.  Kukaboos are in the desert interior (not where I live), a dallywangle lives only in the glacial areas of Australia (and mice and rats dont live there) and the gillywug is a fiction of urban tourist mythology (like a dropbear or flying funnelweb ) ... Nungali Posted February 1, 2014 Ah yes, its a fav old topic ... anyone ever seen the worlds earliest comic strip? The Great War Between the Cats and the Mice ... from ancient Egypt ... it's quiet amusing (those mice are not mocking the cat Pharaoh are they ??? ... even back then apparently cartoons had liberal political license?)

Nungali Posted February 1, 2014 (edited) For some reason its REALLY hard to find and I cant remember where I saw it ... but for you ... I try again ...  similar ones here but not the one I thinking off ... it depicts the stages of a battle and the cats and mice are armed and armoured for the times.  http://www.perankhgroup.com/comics.htm  ( " Slapstick comedy included drawings that showed people suffering unfortunate accidents, such as hammers falling on heads, or passengers tipping out of boats.  "The ancient Egyptians had a special fondness for animal humour, given the many examples of sketches on papyrus, paintings, and other drawings, according to Noegel. He said, "(The images show) ducks pecking at someone's buttocks, baboons and cats out of control, animals riding on top of other unlikely animals, baboons playing instruments, and animals drinking and dining."  "One papyrus shows a mouse pharaoh, gallantly posed in his chariot pulled by two dogs, speeding towards a group of feline warriors * . Yet another papyrus depicts a lion and an antelope playing a board game. The lion lifts a game piece as though in victory, while the antelope falls back in his chair. "From everything that I've seen and heard, I believe that their sense of humour was very similar to our own," )  * Is this taking the piss out of Ramses II story from the Battle of Kadesh ??? oildrops Posted February 5, 2014 Do not use poison, you will end up with a dead bloated animal in your wall stinking for a weeks. Â What I can say is this. You have already given these mice by letting them into your house (you did not seal your house up properly) and feeding them (you did not seal your food up properly). You are going to now either cause their death in some way, or allow them to thrive and reproduce by changing nothing about the situation. Using a humane trap is just a way to make yourself feel better about killing the mouse (out of sight out of mind). I have trapped mice for a living, not for an exterminator. Mice are very territorial and being away from their claim for even a few hours fucks them over. Kill them with a normal trap and throw them in the compost. If you use a humane trap, then put them far enough away from your house or they will come right back in. If you don't seal up your house then new mice will move in. Â Or just let them be, and keep your food out of reach. They will move on, starve to death, or vanish into the energy cosmos and then haunt your dreams for the rest of your life until you die from accidentally ingesting rat poison, when they will rematerialize and eat your brains.
