whitesilk Posted August 28, 2014 What are the practical considerations when attempting to plant lotus root? Will the root, bought as food germinate? Should I attempt to find seeds?
C T Posted August 28, 2014 Interesting idea! How and where do you plan to plant the root(s)? Im thinking a pond or a largish pool with sufficient mud at the bottom will do the job. The yummy roots we buy as food can be grown, under the right conditions.

Stosh Posted August 28, 2014 Lotus can be very invasive in places , keep this in mind because weird things happen and plants manage to escape , and , though the seeds generally have decent germination rates they need to be prepared correctly. (the seed coats are so durable they might last 300 yrs ! )
GrandmasterP Posted August 28, 2014 Sure are pretty though. We had an old disused 'tank' ( stone built pond for water supply) near our compound in India that was totally choked up with lotus. Stunning to look at and teeming with birds
Stosh Posted August 29, 2014 (edited) Yep it is pretty, creates its own environment , but down here , folks act like its evil incarnate ,, as you said. ..it clogs the water for those bass fishermen that havent learned how to fish amongst the weeds ( where all the fish hang out if they have any choice) . whitesilk Posted August 29, 2014 Thanks for the input! I have an indoor pool set up for growing the lotus, with sufficient light and mud. I will plan a trip next week to buy the root. I have bought liquid fertilizer (10-10-10), and haphazardly poured some in already. Going to let the water settle. Water falls, yin is passive. Yang or fire rises.
