mewtwo Posted March 21, 2015 So I go to different chat rooms and forums. I ask allot of questions. Now most of the places I get banned from give the reason that Im asking "stupid" questions or being annoying. Now yes I do tend to harp on a question and might ask it like 10 times in a chat room over the course of a couple of weeks. I also tend to say weird things late at night like "my mom always said to never run with a carrot after drinking milk" When I do say these things I am genuinely laughing when typing cause I find them funny. Are these banable offences? Like I would only ban someone if they threatened another individual or linked illegal porn or anything of that caliber. My question is what is banable for forums and chat rooms? Also if there is a banable offence why do the mods not try and correct the behavior? Â Thanks
Nikolai1 Posted March 21, 2015 A forum isn't a courtroom so a ban doesn't need to be legally justified. Â A forum is like any other social community. If you don't fit in you'll be ostracised, in this case by banning. Â Why a person gets ostracised can't be formulated. To fit in is an art form, you have to play by rules that are unspoken. Â If you annoy people here you'll be banned as well, people have been, though it is rare. If you have a history of bans you certainly need to look hard at your own behaviour.
soaring crane Posted March 21, 2015 You have to a lot more than just annoy people or ask too many stupid questions to get banned from TDB. If that weren't the case, Sean would be here talking to himself lol
Chang Posted March 21, 2015 Rather than ask the question "What do I have to do to get banned?" It were better to ask what is the standard for good behaviour on the forum? Marblehead Posted March 21, 2015 But still, one should not run with a carrot after drinking milk. Â "Why?" Â "Because I said so."
Nungali Posted March 22, 2015 (edited) I got banned from a forum for .... for ....   you know what it is for !  First of all they warned me; no telling jokes ... no expressing yourself in the form of poetry. No linking to pictures texts or sites to back up a point you making, no linking or posting any images at all, no breaking up someone's post in blocks and responding to each section  ... and no  ......    being cryptic, that was another complaint ..... since 'cryptic' is in the behind of the beholder, * how do I know what each reader is thinking ?  Strangely enough, if they could not understand what was written, they often assumed it was nasty ?  (eta ... or I made a typo I wasnt aware off  )  To them 'meta-discussion' was banned;  you say A ... pages later you say , actually B, then I say 'hang on, you said A before, have you changed your mind now " .... foul!  thats taking about the dynamic of the conversation and not the subject matter of the conversation ....  .... I mean ... really !     .... not doing what we said so   Its all different on different forums  (I think you meant when one doesnt break the actual rules but something else happens  .... like  the situation in post #2 applies ? )  Its pretty liberal here.  The other site didnt have a focus on practices that are supposed to bring about awareness and development . I dont think they could see certain subtleties and dynamics that were going on.  A couple of times more than one moderator confessed they could not follow the conversations in their specific forums, many seemed over their heads and too complex.     * ETA  rolf  ... the mind of the beholder .... Live by the notion of "What bothers me, controls me." and let it go. I understand it and I choose to not live this way, so "It is not part of me, bye."  I told a family member yesterday that a certain chemical from grains contributes to teeth decay. And that it might be in relation to the person's now missing teeth. Shortly after saying this simple thing I was attacked for offending and saying that I have always something to critizise. While I was saying in a calm manner the obvious truth: Relation between the individuals love to eat products made from grain and the newly removed molars, 4 in number, which got infected magically at the same time.  ?  You see, it is all a matter of how one perceives things. Stosh Posted March 22, 2015 (edited) I dont understand that last question. Why the mods dont try to correct what ? behavior. They banned you. Thats what they feel is the fix. You feel your actions should have been accept-able, and they may have been, but they didnt feel so. Sure it would be handy to have a higher authority to appeal to, one who was always just, correct all seeing and understanding... and would correct the injustices including wrong moderators. Such a one would validate web morality, uphold it ,embody it. I guess it would essentially be a web-god. The question remains however, if the webgod bans you, who would you appeal to? You can win battles here and there, but you wont win them all,,sometimes its their turn, move on. Wave em a middle finger if you want. But just move on. GrandmasterP Posted March 22, 2015 (edited) I go on another forum that used to get a bit snippy sometimes and people were banned or suspended pretty frequently. I was suspended four times over a couple of years, appealed two and had them lifted but served two suspensions of a week each. Both times for 'spamming' by going off topic. Massive forum so it was really no biggie in one way as far as numbers posting went. Then the forum owner banned bans and , almost overnight; the forum became much more polite. If a thread gets out of hand it gets "pitted" but that hardly ever happens. Edited March 22, 2015 by GrandmasterP
Marblehead Posted March 22, 2015 I have been pitted a couple times.

thelerner Posted March 22, 2015 Its interesting. At the moment I feel mellow & mature, like there'd never be anything that could rile me up enough to get banned or suspended. Yet, I've felt this way before then gotten spitting mad and decidedly less rational.  Maybe like AA's version of alcoholism I can never say I'm above it. Just that it won't happen today and probably not tomorrow but Tuesday all bets are off
Marblehead Posted March 22, 2015 I wonder if there is any difference between a banable post and a damnedable post.   Hey Thelerner, Like I have said before, sometimes it is better to remain silent. That especially applies when we get into one of those shitty moods.

thelerner Posted March 23, 2015 maybe we need to shake things up more on the bums. Something like.. ban one person each month. Totally capriciously. I'm thinking for month 1, we make it: The next person who posts gets banned for life. Then say when a new person joins we tell'em , 'Welcome to the bums, by the way, your banned for life.'  The next month, we could say the next person who uses the 9th letter of the alphabet gets banned. That'd be very Zen, well cruel Zen. When someone writes 'I object'; we can tell'em 'And you're out of here'.  For the third month we can say who ever mentions anything about the Tao gets booted. That might work like the first one, ie the next person who writes anything gets booted and we can tell them 'Buh, bye, its All about the Tao.' Nungali Posted March 23, 2015 maybe we need to shake things up more on the bums. Something like.. ban one person each month.  You are only saying that because you already had your turn        Totally capriciously. I'm thinking for month 1, we make it: The next person who posts gets banned for life. Then say when a new person joins we tell'em , 'Welcome to the bums, by the way, your banned for life.'   This is starting to sound like the  'Kimeo live not tv show competition to save the world.'  It was a live 'show' this crazy Japanese guy that lived here wanted to put on ( I mean crazy as in having an extended episodes of crazyness that got crazier. )  It was actually sounding great!  We really wanted to do it and act the parts he gave us.  I included a high entry fee but dinner was supplied,. if you laughed ... straight out! No dinner for you!  We said "you cant do that; get people to pay $50 for a show and dinner and then kick them it if they laugh at the show with no dinner ... especially when the show is supposed to be funny.."  'NO !  They laugh .... out!  No dinner !  .... Save the world !  "    (Poor guy, he had to deal with me as well.   But he actually did get better (and thanked me as the only person who eventually got angry at him and told him to stop being an idiot ) ... went back to his wife and kids, had a new one recently , he looks real happy now but has maintained a 'reasonable crazyness  - best of both worlds!  The next month, we could say the next person who uses the 9th letter of the alphabet gets banned.  Or just make anyone called 9th banned  ?  That'd be very Zen, well cruel Zen. When someone writes 'I object'; we can tell'em 'And you're out of here'.  For the third month we can say who ever mentions anything about the Tao gets booted. That might work like the first one, ie the next person who writes anything gets booted and we can tell them 'Buh, bye, its All about the Tao.'  So then 'we' all get booted.  And no posters  .... a  Dao forum full of emptiness ,  only definable by the container that surrounds it.
