Strangely, the English and Chinese version of Wiki for WLP are different.   In Chinese version, there is a section called Controversy:  translated to be as follows.

 

In China, there are different opinions about Wang Liping's status in Taoism and the content of his teachings. Some people think it is the true inheritance of Taoism, while some people think it is misleading.  In the West, there has been a long-standing controversy over the high tuition fees charged by Wang Liping. After some people participated in Wang Liping's small class, they scorned and verbally attacked practitioners of other sects and Taoist enthusiasts who had not participated in the small class. Online intimidation of those who hold different opinions has caused many different opinions and controversies.

 

He is indeed controversial.

I was not around for the mopai wars either.

 

In the past year a now-banned member accused another member's wife of being a prostitute (simply based on her country of origin) and that second member threatened legal action. That was pretty interesting. I wonder what happened with that.

Those who have been here for the longest time and still haven't kicked the habit remember many messes that far exceed this one.  Max Christensen of Kunlun is one that comes to mind, then there were those sexual possession via chat or whatever times, the O at a D thing, many more, I just remember the gist of it ("what a shitshow") but not the subject matter.   

And the biggest one is Not To Be  Talked About.  All the prior ones, the forum more or less survived without losing its qi.  But that one, the one Not To Be Talked About, drained something like 90% of it.    

 

And still, most places on the internet are an even bigger shitshow.  Perhaps the internet imitates life which imitates the entities possessing humanity?

I agree, that adds to the weirdness of the whole topic. Any of us who have trained with methods in that book have also seen real results. Like if he is a lier, to what extent? I'm a martial artist and I've definitely seen teachers exaggerate stories from their past or even how people try to make it seem like this was their full lifestyle but really it was more of a 'I do this on weekends' kind of thing lol.

Another example, with martial artists is how they'll talk about how they train Shaolin Kung Fu and they'll speak on the deeper arts and claim to have trained, when the reality is they never trained it traditionally, which means everyday for years. 

Basically what I'm saying is could it be that Wang Liping was around some serious cultivators who said he had potential and taught him many things but he didn't actually do it full time as the book makes it seem?

It would make sense to me that anyone that goes to his retreat will experience seeing something mystical from him, whether he was trying to show it or not. I feel like it would be truly felt. Like, has no one asked him to play hide and seek or anything? lmao I would definitely try to silently test him, maybe throw a paper ball at him, or hide in a tree and try to scare him lmao. If he gets mad that's also a sign.

I do think it's possible to show a high level of respect to someone but also respectfully ask for a demonstration or to test his abilities. 

In traditional martial arts, it is very normal to challenge a master before you accept them as a teacher.

It should be respected that you're not just being gullible and blindly trusting him especially after paying so much money.

Nigh on every comment I've read about Master Wang online, come from folks who've never met him, nor studied with him.  With the exception of three I can think of in the moment.

 

As such, these offhand comments are persona projections based on assumptions and speculation and are akin to traffic noise in their efficacy and usefulness.  They stem from unqualified observers and so their comments carry no inherent use or validity for one who's encountered and engaged authentically.

I'll tell you about the second biggest.  It was Mo Pai, occasionally referred to as more pie, and it was not a pie I ever took a slice of but I remember it being baked and burned and banned and resurrected from the ashes again and again, like, forever.

Yes, I remember Mo Pai. That was back in my day. Also Kunlun/max and a few other things around that time. Haven't spent enough time here the last 10 pr so years to keep up with the battles/scandals much. I did briefly catch the cult thing. SongoftheGods or something made some sort of online cult with recruits from here or something along those lines. I also heard there was some sort of politics blow out but am not up to date on that.
