Taoist Texts Posted June 12, 2016 your comment on the Spanish Civil war did not seem to indicate that you had read up on it. It is enormously complex and people fought on both sides for a variety of reasons. Rather like the American Civil war to reduce it to a single issue is a mistake. No it is not. The single issue is: in a historical perspective was Spain better off under Franco or under the communists? For one thing the Spanish Republic was democratically elected through the popular vote - while Franco and his associates staged a military coup. It could have been democratically elected but shortly after turned into a communist cabal. Franco did his duty.

Chang Posted June 14, 2016 Clear skies are a jolly good thing. Clear skies are indeed a jolly good thing. Like or loathe him there is little doubt that Franco did that which he considered was his duty. Had the Socialist factions been less useless then things may have turned out differently. Apech Posted June 14, 2016 We don't know how things would have fared if Franco had lost but his economic track record was not great : http://countrystudies.us/spain/51.htm ... his social policies were backward looking and repressive of course.

This is true but we have only to look at Socialist track records as regards economic stability and growth to see that Spain would have faired no better under Left Wing rule. So far as the civil war is concerned the Left had no chance of winning power. Have you ever read Orwells "Homage to Catalonia"? What a damned shower.

Of course there was no 'Left' entity as such but just a loose group who supported the elected government. Everything from liberals to anarchists to soviet communists. One of the reasons it lost.
