Daeluin Posted January 14, 2017 In hexagram 63 water is above fire. Fire rises, water sinks, and thus they rest upon one another. The fire keeps the water warm and the water keeps the fire grounded. In hexagram 64 water is beneath fire. Here there is separation and the two abandon each other, leaving the water to become isolated and frozen, a very dangerous obstacle to deal with, and fire becomes wild, scatters, and loses its root. When things listen to each other and work toward integration there is harmony and richness and synchronicity. When things separate and abandon one another we have unexpected challenges, like an errant baseball flying toward one's head as one walks down a sidewalk, or a human in space without a suit. These hexagrams describe extremes of separation and integration, but they are easy to fathom. It is no different than holding one's hands together or spreading them apart. Each contains the seed of the other - when we become aware of the momentum of a situation, we also identify how to break its harmony, or how to meet its conflict with greater safety. In a room of shouting people there is great conflict, but certain things may be said or done at the right time to nurture increased harmony between them. A human being cannot safely withstand exposure to outer space, but a suit can be made for protection. The greater the extremes, the more precautions must be taken to navigate them safely. There are many things we think are simply impossible - the technology of flight is a great example of how many tried and failed before we found a way.
