Any benefit of holding tongue to roof of mouth passively?

Recommended Posts

We know that holding the tongue to roof of mouth allows the flow of Qi from one part of the body to the other and we do this in many QiGong exercises to facilitate this flow of Qi. But I'm sure you would agree that Qi is ALWAYS flowing in your body whether you practice QiGong or not.

So why not just hold the tongue to the roof of your mouth passively everyday for an hour or so while you do other activities. Could there be any benefit in doing so theoretically? This would allow Qi to flow efficiently for that time period.

There are various location regarded as the roof of the mouth - I suggest the tip of the tongue located at the forward roof as if you just said the word "bite".

Yes - having it there as habit is good practice.

Yes there is a benefit, as Silent Thunder said, it should happen automatically, passively ... 24 hours a day.

If your tongue is not touching the roof of your mouth it means you are holding tension in your tongue, and your tongue is connected to the core of your being.  Relax!

When the core of your being and your tongue are relaxed then the tongue extends forward and naturally fills the mouth, touching top, bottom, sides, with no air spaces; even if your teeth are slightly apart, which they should be to not hold tension in your jaw, which is connected to your core almost as closely to your tongue.  Even when your teeth are slightly apart it allows your tongue to protrude further forward to fill the space.

24 hours a day.

The things you hear about holding the tip of your tongue in certain spots on the roof of your mouth (meaning you are still using tension and have air spaces in your mouth) appears to be a curious form of misguided pedantic fundamentali$m.   :)

Lu K'uan Yu - Taoist Yoga - Alchemy and Immortality, page 125-126

The technique of lifting fire should on no account be
used frequently for to do so causes dizziness and injures vitality.
Each turn of the eyes causes vitality in the cavity of life
to soar up, spreading to the mouth, eyes, ears and nostrils which are
the seven openings by which vitality scatters away. Of the seven,
the heavenly pool cavity(t'ien ch'ih) above the mouth is the
opening by which the greatest quantity of vitality drains away.
This is why the loss of vitality due to excessive speaking and singing
is comparatively greater than in other activities. Hence all
practisers of Taoist meditation always touch the palate with the tip
of the tongue whether they walk, stand, sit or recline, not only to block
the heavenly pool and prevent the drain of vitality, but also to make
bridge by which vitality descends from the hsuan ying center(the mysterious
bridle behind the heavenly pool in the palate) down the throat,
heart(M), chiang kung cavity (solar plexus)(N), lower tan t'ien center (O),
and mortal gate (A) to nurture the immortal seed.
All students should know that in the upper part of the body if the cavity
of the heavenly pool(in the palate) is not blocked the hsuan ying cannot open;
that in the lower part of the body if the channel of function(jen mo)
is not blocket the control channel(tu mo in the spine) cannot open; and that
in the middle part of the body if the other six channels(ch'ung mo, tai mo,
yang ch'iao, yin ch'iao, yang wei and yin wei) are not blocked,
the cavity of spirit(between and behind the eyes) will not open and the
vitality in the immortal foetus cannot come out.
