Learning to surf the Ocean of energy

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I've been on the spiritual path and working with energy for quite a while.  I'm also a Yoga teacher, and in the last 18 months have been exploring the breath, which has brought me to the Chinese philosophies.  I always found the Indian information about the energy body lacking, and the information in the Tao is anything but...  (Apparently the Indian schools were more tight-lipped about this knowledge).

Anyway, wow.  Am learning so much at the moment.  Moving energy around my body through the breath makes much more sense now, though I cant process all the names of the different channels.  Also I'm reading a book by someone who I just discoved is pretty unpopular in the Tao community (he who shall not be Named)... So looking for another recommmendation of a book on the energy body, breath and inner breath, if anyone has one!

While waiting for my post to be apporved I will continue to rearrange my flat in accordance with the principles of Feng shui :)

Nice to be here!

Hello Ocean, and welcome.

Your membership is approved and we're happy you found your way to us. We look forward to accompanying you on some of the way that you still have to go.

Please take the time to read the two posts pinned at the top of this Welcome page and take a look at the forum terms and rules. This covers all you need to know when getting started.

For the first week you will be restricted to ten posts per day but after that you can post as much as you like. Also, until you’ve posted fifteen times in the forums, you’ll be a “Junior Bum” with somewhat restricted access and will be allowed only two private messages per day.

Good luck in your pursuits and best wishes to you,

Marblehead and the TDB team

Hi Ocean,

Sounds like you know what it is you are looking for.

You are welcome to jump right in ongoing discussions, revive an older thread, start a new thread of your own, or start a discussion in the "Newcomer Corner" sub-forms to expand on your introduction or ask general questions to help you get started.

May you enjoy your time here.

If you're looking for book recommendations regarding breathwork and the internal energy system, you couldn't do better than Damo Mitchell's work imo. I'd highly recommend all of his books, but by the sound of it his Daoist Nei Gong and Heavenly Streams would be particularly interesting to you - the former is an introduction to Daoist cultivation with a substantial chapter devoted to proper breathing techniques, and the latter is devoted to explaining the meridian system of the body (it's one of the most articulate and succinct explanations I've found) and techniques of working with different channels.

Welcome :)

Beyond books, I really treasure an audio CD, I got years ago.  Thought I was ripped when I first heard it.  Just tones.  One set of equal tones, going from 8 seconds in- 8 seconds out moving to 46 seconds in to 46 seconds out tone.  Plus a second set that used 1-4-2 set for breathing starting with 4in- 16hold-8 out, going into extraordinarily long breathing rhythms.  <addon Yogic tones by Silent Ground>

The point was to put it into an MP3 player set to repeat each 'tone' over and over.  Thus no theory or instruction, just let your breath follow the tones.  These days there are lots of breathing apps you can set to do the same thing.  But this was simpler because once you felt comfortable with one rate, you can hit >> and move to the next, and see how long you could comfortably keep it up.

After doing Wim Hof breathing I'll do 10in 40hold 20out- repeat.  The big benefit of slow breathing is it slows the mind and when you stop; go au natural, your breath remains long, your body more relaxed.

Hi Ocean,

I am tickled by Kar3n's - 'Be the ocean, not the surfer'.

Presently I am not an ocean or anywhere yet within the 'Ocean' i.e. 'The Dao Bums'.

Why? I have not gotten myself a fool-proof life-jacket yet.

Then 'who am I' or 'where am I' when it comes to water?

You really want to know?

Well - I am about 70% water and sitting quite squarely in my bathtub.

Little drops of water make a mighty ocean.

So please don't get drowned.

Hi Marblehead,

Just returned from a trip to Thesaurus; the weather there was just great - bright sunshine + very slight drizzle + cool breeze.

Whilst there, I was told that ‘Rock’ can be a noun or a verb.

As a noun:  Rock = Pillar = Mainstay = Stalwart = Tower of strength.

As a verb:  Rock = Astound = Shock = Shake = Stun.

Apparently you are rocky noun, but which/what kind?

Hi Marble,

Or are you Simon & Garfunkel’s rock thus:

"I Am A Rock"

A winter's day
In a deep and dark December
I am alone
Gazing from my window
To the streets below
On a freshly fallen, silent shroud of snow
I am a rock
I am an island

I've built walls
A fortress, steep and mighty
That none may penetrate
I have no need of friendship
Friendship causes pain.
It's laughter and it's loving I disdain.
I am a rock
I am an island

Don't talk of love
Well, I've heard the words before
It's sleeping in my memory
And I won't disturb the slumber
Of feelings that have died
If I never loved, I never would have cried
I am a rock
I am an island

I have my books
And my poetry to protect me
I am shielded in my armor
Hiding in my room
Safe within my womb
I touch no one and no one touches me
I am a rock
I am an island

And a rock feels no pain
And an island never cries

I really hope not

Well, there was a time in my life when I was Simon's "Rock" but my reference was to this:

Help!  I'm A Rock - Frank Zappa

Help I'm a rock, help I'm a rock, help I'm a rock
Ahahahahahahaaa
Help I'm a rock, help I'm a rock, help I'm a rock
Somebody, please, please
Help I'm a rock, help I'm a rock...
Wow man, it's a drag being a rock
Help I'm a rock...
I wish I was anything but a rock
Heck, I'd even like to be a policeman
Hey, you know what, you know maybe if I practised, you know
Maybe if I passed my driving test
I could get a gig drivin' that bus and pick some freaks up
In front of Ben Franks, right

Help I'm a cop, help I'm a cop, help I'm a cop
(Help I'm a rock...), help I'm a cop, help I'm a cop
It's a drag being a cop, I think I'd rather be the mayor
Always wondered what I was gonna be when I grew up, you know

Always wondered whether or not, whether or not I could make it
You know, in society, because
You know, it's a drag when you're rejected
So I tore the cover off a book of matches and I sent in
And I got this letter back that said, UHU, AHA

I think I am a verb.  Well, maybe a verb and a noun.  Yeah, both.

See how good we are?  We can take even an introduction and membership approval off topic into never-never land.

Our thoughts/actions revolve, evolve, resolve, absolve … around words … their Taoist flipsides … noun, verb, adjective … past, present, future tense …

So let us choose our words carefully otherwise …

I always believe this – pity the (wo)man who knows more … or talks too much …

Heaven/hell are (wo)man-made words. Yes/no? Heaven forbids and hell breaks loose. So how?

Maybe we should just silently use body language e.g. a bear hug, a pat on the back, a ruffling of loved ones’ hair (for baldies a pat will suffice) …

When I meditate I like to reach emptiness/void where no word exists.

So ocean of energy or ocean of words?

Anyhow don’t maditate with/on words.(But your guru uses mantras, right?. So how? I don't know - your problem not mine.)

Don’t maditate with words.

Hi Jonesboy,

From your flow of thoughts,

(1) the Ocean is Me

(2) Me = Body + Mind

(3) Energy = sexual, chi, prana, friction from the palm, yin, yang ...

Yes/No?

Please advise what is meant by 'only with permission'.

Hi LimA,

I would say that:

Light = Ocean, which is body, mind, energy.

It is all light.

I have realized that I am Light to a degree that I can share it or better said when someone connects to me they can experience it also up to their level of purification.

Because of that I don't check people out or do anything without permission. Even when I work with someone every step I take I ask permission.. each and every session.

Hi Jonesboy,

Yes, it is; you are so right.

It shines on good insights.

Fear not a dark night.

Light makes it bright.

You the are the LIGHT that allows connections honed with permission.

May I add that - "when someone connects to me they can experience it also up to their level of purification" - I thought of the rainbow thus:

LIGHT => PERMISSION => CONNECTION => PURIFICATION => RAINBOW

And then I heard this ....

Thank you.
