onebir Posted December 25, 2007 Apparently, when they get ill, they know what to eat to cure themselves. A research project is being set up to observe them & screen the plants they eat for compounds for use in human medicine. Â "Chimp medicine is good medicine" Â I'd always assumed animals (unless maybe they're traumatised) were "one with the Dao", and that humans weren't because we'd developed the ability to use language to communicate, & from there it crossed over into the medium for thought. But I wasn't so sure about apes, which have some capacity for language. But this level of sensitivity to their own bodies and the plants around them - judging from the story they select plants by instinct rather than learning from the other chimps - suggests they are...
