Do Daoists perceive Ancestors as Separate?

I was speaking with a Daoist and one of the things I noticed was that he didn't share the idea that my parents were different people than me. I'm sure i have a misconception of what he meant but he doesn't see them as separate like normal people do. Is this a common theme in Daoism?

Yes it is. In the entire chinese culture actually.

Can you elaborate? Like how they view ancestors? 

Saying there is a connection isn't very specific, even westerners would say there is a connection.
