Taomeow Posted February 9, 2008 (edited) I am certain that taoist practices can overcome the symptoms of a disease, just like they can overcome feelings of pain, but I'm pretty sure bipolar disorder is partly caused by malnutrition, specifically a deficiency in omega-3 fatty acids. I'm not picking fights, I just happen to know something about this. MDP is multifactorial as most human disturbances, but a lithium deficiency is almost as strongly linked to it as vitamin C deficiency to scruvy. Source: "Nutritional Influences on Psychiatric Illness," author forgotten (I read it ten years ago), a large, fascinating tome of info. Where people still eat local foods, MDP is endemic to the areas that are the farthest from the ocean, and rare closer to the coast -- due to the content of lithium in the soil, low in the former, high in the latter. Â Dopamine is player number one among neurochemicals that determine how the brain, the nervous system, the muscles, and the mind cope with stress, but it is never the only factor. All monoamines have a say in it -- but nutrition, while a huge factor, is not always the solution to the problem. E.g., if someone was born premature, the dopaminergic system will be lifelong deficient in its output, because it fully matures in -- gasp -- the last seven days of gestation. So even one week too early is too early for it to be fully competent -- throughout life. Considering modern moms are led to believe that they can schedule the birth of the baby on a convenient date, that labor-forcing interventions or Cesarean sections are like hairdresser appointments... Most things done early (not "by you" but "to you") most people will never fix. This is what everybody finds so hard to accept that it isn't even considered: helplessness. All kinds of practices give an illusion of control. But the really useful ones teach one about helplessness, not about power. It's much more difficult to incorporate into your consciousness than any which kind of power, but if this isn't done, everything else has to dislocate itself to create a bypass around the truth -- that's how people wind up with dislocated minds. I do admire your optimism though. Cutting is about endorphins though, not dopamine. But consider that a sense of "pressure of the void" is also an idea, not just a chemical event... There IS a void where natural developmental experiences should have been in most people. Edited February 9, 2008 by Taomeow
SFJane Posted February 9, 2008 (edited) That's the problem with the Western meditation studies -- they're testing mind yoga practitioners -- not full-lotus yoga masters, like qigong master chunyi Lin. For example the Dalai Lama has been a big influence on these meditation studies and he's sect is mind meditation -- not actually full-lotus yoga. I even emailed the scientist at UW-Madison, my alma mater, where these MRI meditation studies are taking place -- requesting that he test qigong master Chunyi Lin.   with all due respect, the W M Keck lab at U Madtown is not the only place these tests are occuring. I assure you from experience, your leg position has nothing to do with how far out or how far in you can go with your mind.  I speak from having read Dr. Sarah Lazar's work, among others. Dr. Sarah Lazar works at Harvard. I emailed her to partake in her study and get my brain scanned, but they did not have the funding to add more participants at that time.   I am certain that taoist practices can overcome the symptoms of a disease, just like they can overcome feelings of pain, but I'm pretty sure bipolar disorder is partly caused by malnutrition, specifically a deficiency in omega-3 fatty acids. I'm not picking fights, I just happen to know something about this  well, I too don't care to pick fights either  with all due respect, you should present your findings to the psychiatric community if you are that confident.  I am currently working on my manuscript about a book about bipolar recovery. I spent years at close proximity to the mental health system, I have a bipolar brother, sister and mother. I am the only one in my family that is without bipolar symptoms. Bipolar and schizophrenia, occupied most of my life. Like yourself, I happen to know something about this as well.  In all humility I have quite a few psychiatrists, psychologists and even a few neuroscientists subscribed to my videos on youtube. There are people in the mental health field listening to me now. I have done the therapies, drugs, the works. I was one of those for whom nothing worked.  I have run the gamut of diets, nutrition and supplements. None of it can dent suicidal depression or the mania.  It is like this, there is no vitamin, no supplement, no acid, no salt that can give you a reason to live. If deep down you do not want to live, there is nothing anyone can do for you.  All I can say is, I tried everything with the exception of ECT.  Certainly diets and supplements made me feel better, but they have nothing to do with why people come down with bipolar disorder or getting rid of it.  Meditation worked, where all else failed.   I say this having myself as the test subject for my personal bipolar recovery experiments.  There are some people for whom changing diets or adding supplements can have major dramatic positive effects on them, in that case, they were not bipolar to begin with, they suffered nutritional deficiencies which caused symptoms that masqueraded as symptoms of bipolar.  That was not me.  In the book that I am writing, I go into these things extensively. As such, I am presenting my findings in the hopes that others with severe mental illness can find their path as I did. I am really quite confident about both my knowledge of meditation and my knowledge of psychology and mental illness. Since both have been part of my life, in some form or fashion for over 30 years now.  Since you seem to think malnutrition causes bipolar, I really doubt there is much I could say to convince you otherwise. I have talked about this extensively on my youtube videos and on my blog, both of which are linked below. Edited February 9, 2008 by SFJane
voidisyinyang Posted February 9, 2008 Sounds like good work SF Jane! Here's a debate with Lazar -- but notice the FRAMEWORK of the debate is focused on mind yoga (a resting mind versus a focused mind).... http://flowstate.homestead.com/files/lazar.html  In the West we tend to ignore the body's role -- I would recommend Stanford U Professor Robert Sapolsky's research. He also promotes meditation but focuses on the adrenal connection to the hypothalamus-pituitary glands. That's closer to actual alchemy practices like the microcosmic orbit, etc. He's a physiologist studying mammal stress and how it affects disease -- the emotion connection to physiology.  One good example with the focusing versus resting issue is when qigong master Chunyi Lin did a study at the U of MN where he was supposed to not send healing energy to people even though he could heal them (so that the study had a control). The problem with this approach as "objectivity" is that a healer takes in the pain of the person they are reading the energy of and sending out the healing energy is also what enables the healer to transduce and get rid of the pain they take in. The West doesn't take into consideration how the healing process is actually not based on an objective observer but a third system of consciousness which guides both the healer and the person being healed. So that study did not bring positive results.  Qigong master Effie P. Chow has done a lot of N.I.H. studies -- and she IS a real full-lotus master -- another exception.  Thanks for sharing SF Jane! witch Posted February 9, 2008 with all due respect, you should present your findings to the psychiatric community if you are that confident.   They aren't my findings, they are Dr. Stoll's, someone I met with with the possibility of doing research together.  http://archpsyc.ama-assn.org/cgi/content/full/56/5/407  He doesn't go that far, to say malnutrition causes it, but I do.  Here is epidemiological data supporting my hypothesis  http://ajp.psychiatryonline.org/cgi/conten...act/160/12/2222  Bah! Why am I doing this! I'm going to stop now. I'm tired of fighting, I'm tired.   This is my master at the NIH (the one holding the fish):  http://www.niaaa.nih.gov/ResearchInformati...tDICBR/LMBB/NN/
voidisyinyang Posted February 9, 2008 Well it is interesting that seafood would probably have higher lithium as well! HAHA Â So I wonder what the connection is with Omega 3 and lithium -- probably bind to each other like yin and yang. haha. Plus there's gotta be some intense side effects from taking too much lithium or even too much omega 3. haha. I get my head full of crap all the time just because I eat normal food while sitting in full-lotus. haha. Â Anyway yeah I got banned from Michael Prescott's blog PRECISELY because I was focusing on how parapsychology ignores the importance of the body for creating powers, etc. Prescott focuses on channelling and mind meditation, etc. I argued that this is political because the original Christians practiced fasting for body transformation -- the first bishops -- but then the Holy Roman Empire got rid of that church and said that the real Bishops just use mind meditation -- sacred writing, etc. You can see this same fixation in the occult magick scene as well where they just repeat the Holy Roman Empire "rituals" with magick writing that you enchant, etc. -- pretty much ignoring the focus on body transformation. This ignoring of the body in Zen is also a big schtick in Master Nan, Huai-chin's writings -- and that's also why he's ignored by the whole "What is Enlightenment" scene, etc. Prescott was pissed because he believes in the Historical Christ and then I went to the library and posted quotes from all the authors who cited, detailing the wholes in their arguments. haha. Â http://truthbeknown.com for further details. Â Oh wait -- no fighting. Thanks witch!
Taomeow Posted February 10, 2008 Well it is interesting that seafood would probably have higher lithium as well! HAHA No haha-- you're right. Â As for higher doses than what naturally occurs in good unmolested foods, they are notoriously toxic. Lithium used as a psychiatric drug helps over 70 percent of MDP sufferers but individual doses are very tricky (an extremely narrow margin between therapeutic and toxic), and liver functions must be monitored weekly or it will be damaged in no time. This is old school psychiatry, way back when they didn't think twice about using molecules that occur naturally and therefore can't be patented. It doesn't matter how useful omega-3s are, until someone modifies them and owns them, they won't be 'prescribed.' The modified version never works as well but the unmolested one never brings billions in profits, so... Viagra is the answer to the question 'how do I get more bang out of my jing' and heavy duty antipsychotics, to the question of the meaning of life.

Mal Posted February 15, 2008 need to read "around" the language a bit in this one. Â Evil fire as in being attatched to desire / lust. (I think)
Ian Posted February 15, 2008 Â Anyway yeah I got banned from Michael Prescott's blog PRECISELY because I was focusing on how parapsychology ignores the importance of the body for creating powers, etc. Â It seemed to me as if you were banned from the particular page to which Smile posted the link simply because you spewed out several huge blasts of text which had nothing whatever to do with the topic people were discussing. That seemed to be what the chap banning you was saying. I'm not trying to be unkind: I really am curious to find out whether you really think there was a hidden agenda there, because it looked to me like a very ordinary reaction to inappropriate communication. Â Best wishes, Ian
voidisyinyang Posted February 23, 2008 Anyway -- the deal about "evil fire" is that you lose electromagnetic energy through the eyes -- looking at chicks -- but if you're sitting in full-lotus you also take in their electrochemical energy when you look at them as well. Or reverse breathing does this.  BUT -- since that energy is electrochemical then it HAS to be "burned" through meditation (more full-lotus or small universe) back into electromagnetic energy -- or else you'll lose it as nocturnal emission -- the jing as generative heat will convert back to fluid.  The same with too much food -- or too much work and not enough meditation, etc.  As far as BUILDING up the energy -- well it's difficult to do if you are just cycling it through yin-yang exchanges -- what I call "O at a D" -- but then this was the main use for paranormal healing energy anyway, as per the Bushmen culture. The women would throw water on the men if they tried to do spirit travel. haha.  The "immortal fetus" is shown as a full-lotus position so I strongly recommend this for efficacy.  The stronger the energy gets the MORE you have to burn off the increase yin-yang exchange in electrochemical energy intake (the yin energy).  So you can see where that's headed -- when the deep samadhi occurs -- the 10 days without food and water that is described in the book.  And then it's even harder to get past the "immortal breathing" chapter which is where I got -- that's actually just right before what's called:  Nirvikalpi Samadhi  in Vedic philosophy.  Unless of course you're a professional.... haha.
