Aetherous Posted November 21, 2018 Does anyone know if there is an "interlinear" or "trot" translation of the Daodejing? What I mean by this: where it contains the Chinese character, and then below each character, an English nearly-word for word translation? And/or one that compares and contrasts all of the different versions and fragments of the DDJ? Such as Guodian, Heshang Gong, etc. And/or one that contains traditional commentaries? If not, wouldn't it be great if this existed in one book?

I'm wondering which version of the DDJ this translation is based on? Maybe I'll find out when I purchase it. Funny: the resources section of that book references the Dao Bums

wandelaar Posted November 21, 2018 When you buy it take note that there are two versions of the book, and if I remember well only the large version has the Chinese characters in it. One of the writers is also a member of this forum.

I'm sure others here use the daoisopen site already, but I plan on using the book with it (clicking on the chapter): http://www.daoisopen.com/comparisons.html And taking notes on what differs. I know other scholars have written books doing this already, and maybe I'll pick some of those up, but I just like the idea of personally seeing where the characters differ, rather than reading someone else's study of it. I need to keep working on mastering Pulleyblank and Barnes for grammar...I feel like only after we know that subject, we're able to discern the meaning of the classics accurately. I'm also picking up the other versions of the Laozi which aren't included on the daoisopen site:https://www.amazon.com/Early-Daoist-Scriptures-Classics-No/dp/0520219317 I need to find the Beida version, and the Suo Dan version. I want to get the more important commentaries: https://www.amazon.com/Ho-Shang-Kung-Commentary-Ching-Revised-ebook/dp/B018UUARJK/ https://www.amazon.com/Chinese-Reading-Daodejing-Philosophy-Mandarin/dp/0791451828 Picked up this book, Thread of the Dao, which I'm sure you all know, which has some contemporaneous texts that may have influenced the DDJ or vice versa...it compares them, which is sometimes very insightful. I liked Taoist Texts' (forum member) approach, of searching for terms or phrases used in all of the classical period texts...which can sometimes potentially elucidate the DDJ's meaning.

Daoisopen ... forum is closed. I used to participate... as did Rene where I first meet her there, I think. I once had the Beida version till my computer crashed... and I lost about 300 pdfs on daoism... some Heshang Gong translations... I'm smiling since.

I think maybe Wagner did some additional work figuring out the characters for the DDJ version which Wang Bi used, which isn't the same as the Wang Bi version we have today...but beyond that, no clue. Thanks for the heads up on that version!
dawei Posted December 1, 2018 12 hours ago, wandelaar said: How does the second book differ from this book that I already bought? Wagner wrote a translation of the DDJ based on Wang Bi's notes ! He takes some pains to compare that to the Wang Bi received version and others. It has lots of english notes and chinese to show the WB notes. it's a rather incredible book part of a series of 3. I have two of them. I would not recommend it for just a unique translation but rather if one really wants to study the DDJ in depth.
