I don't think enlightened ones are impotent, and I think they can still have sex...they just don't cling mentally.

To either 'be attracted by'  or   'have to  avoid'  (two ways of dealing with a 'mental cling' )   is not 'enlightenment' . e

I once heard  an elderly Lama speak about his girlfriend back home. A woman listening questioned him; "But you are a monk ! "

"Yes."  he smiled .

Woman ;   " But you are not supposed to have sex ! "

"Well, "  Lama replied  " I am  79 years old "

(it seemed 'desire'  was not necessary to have a 'girl friend' )

The Buddha is traditionally regarded as having the Thirty-two Characteristics of a Great Man (Skt. mahāpuruṣa lakṣaṇa).[7] These thirty-two characteristics are also regarded as being present in cakravartin kings as well.[7]

The Digha Nikaya, in the "Discourse of the Marks" (Pali: Lakkhaṇa Sutta) (DN 30) enumerates and explains the 32 characteristics.[2]These are also enumerated in the Brahmāyu Sutta of the Majjhima Nikāya (MN 91).

The 32 major characteristics are:[8]

  1. Level feet
  2. Thousand-spoked wheel sign on feet
  3. Long, slender fingers
  4. Pliant hands and feet
  5. Toes and fingers finely webbed
  6. Full-sized heels
  7. Arched insteps
  8. Thighs like a royal stag
  9. Hands reaching below the knees
  10. Well-retracted male organ
  11. Height and stretch of arms equal
  12. Every hair-root dark colored
  13. Body hair graceful and curly
  14. Golden-hued body
  15. Ten-foot aura around him
  16. Soft, smooth skin
  17. Soles, palms, shoulders, and crown of head well-rounded
  18. Area below armpits well-filled

To check if everything still works

That is funny.

However. If one is enlightened, they simply don't feel the need to have sex, (and yes they can, but only through their unwavering capability and freedom) because the pleasure they feel is more full body, and more consistent and more expansive in nature, due to their physical alignment with their greater non-physical pure positive being. So you could describe it as a constant full body orgasm made out of pure white light. But it is not like that at all. Their physical being is simply not having any resistance to the constant flow of pure positive energy from their Source. That is why sex is not a big deal to them.

For us, it is a very high flying energy, that is fast, and thus our inability to translate it or perceive it or realise it for, makes it appear to be "less"

Their pleasure is not less, it is just that they are more sensitive and more capable of translating the greater totality of their non-physical being. That always makes it more for them. This state of being also contains no doubt. It is infinitely worthy and infinitely capable and deserving. It is also who we actually truely are. The core essence of our nature. And the eternal Source of our being. We can never be disconnected from that. Not completely. But we can have resistance in our mixture of energy, that can allow one to experience a "less" state of being. And that is always simple and easy and effortless to let go of. Unless the momentum of the resistant energy is very heavy, then  it has to play itself out, due to the momentum of how energy works. That is always temporary in nature and discomfort. For you can never truely be disconnected from who you truely are as the totality of your being. These are just small experiences of resistance in the greater totality of existance that is abounded by the ever expanding well-being at the foundation of its creation that always allows for a better experience. In all spaces and places. Unconditionally, unbound by conditions, unconditionally worthy, as who we all are. By the very nature of our existance. And it is only non-physical if you have not yet learned to recognize it and thus realise it. Cause you've simply not yet allowed yourself to look at it as it already is, and exists and has always existed and will forever exist in and as the ever expanding nature of who we truely already always are.

...... by the way , its not just the Buddhist 'perfect man'  , the Greeks thought similar.

Have you ever wondered why

See ;   “Penile representations in ancient Greek art” . conducted in 2013 by the University of Athens and published in the US National Library of Medicine. -  “The examination of a great number of penile representations from the ancient Greek pottery and sculpture and the review of the ancient theater plays (satiric dramas and comedies)” (Rempelakos, Tsiamis, and Poulakou-Rebelakou, 2013).

The ancient Greek ideal man was not a lustful lover but a wise public servant. “Greeks associated small and non-erect penises with moderation, which was one of the key virtues that formed their view of ideal masculinity,” explains classics professor Andrew Lear, who has taught at Harvard, Columbia, and NYU. “There is the contrast between the small, non-erect penises of ideal men (heroes, gods, nude athletes etc.) and the over-size, erect penises of Satyrs (mythic half-goat-men, who are drunkards and wildly lustful) and various non-ideal men. Decrepit, elderly men, for instance, often have large penises.” (Goldhill, 2016)  - (even though modern studies identify onr of the causes of  'shrinkage' as 'old age')

Indeed, there are many sculptures from this time that show large penises, but they are not of Zeus. For example, one god who is always depicted as ‘well-endowed’ by modern standards is Priapus, god of fertility, protector of livestock and gardens. Priapus is the son of Aphrodite (goddess of beauty) and Dionysus (god of wine). While still in the womb, Priapus was cursed by Hera (wife of Zeus) to be forever impotent, foul-minded, and ugly (she cursed him because Paris choose Aphrodite, see The Iliad ). He was so grotesque that the other gods refused to allow him to live with them. So he was raised by lustful satyrs. Forever filled with lust, there are several myths in which Priapus tries to rape sleeping goddesses, nymphs, and maidens. But each time he loses his erection before he can. He is a ridiculous figure and always portrayed with an enormous penis.

In addition to mythical creatures, ancient Greeks saw other negative examples of large penises: the barbarians. In addition to being foolish, a large penis indicated a person was uncivilized. Remember, at this point in history Greece was something of an island of civilization amid more primitive hunter-gather tribes who frequently tried to raid Greek towns. For better or worse, a barbarian stereotype of crazed men ruled by their lustful urges emerged. “Many barbarians surrounding Greece whom had raided and warred with Greece had demonstrated their penis worship and such practices were therefore a sign of barbarism and cultural vacuum in the eyes of the Greeks” (Admin, 2016). Whether a fool or a barbarian, large penises were considered signs of a man ruled by desire (not rationality) and were associated with uncivilized, animal-like behaviors.

It would be incorrect to say an Enlightened person “cannot have sex”. That would imply a physical disfunction.

If the definition of Enlightenment is the cessation of suffering - it does not imply any disfunction of the physical capability and may or may not effect continued sexual engagement.

If the definition of Enlightenment is both the cessation of suffering and freedom from rebirth as well as numerous subtle bodies changes - disfunction does not take place but it is quite likely that sexual activity and engagement have nearly or entirely ceased.

At such time as this change does or does not take place - it will not in any way seem like a loss - like having lost something - it will not feel like a loss of virility - it will not be missed (even if it was a big part of previous personhood - it will be of zero concern and it will not weigh upon one in the least).

One will no longer get lost in momentum’s - DNA markers will not climb into you -  sympathetic resonance will draw no quarter and life will be more vivid than ever.

And concerns about Futures and Pasts will cease as time and space fall away - this is perhaps the key to understanding what cannot be understood in this - the energies are not withdrawn from - they are thousands of times greater and finer and more vivid - but in Light - not in the candied relative dense branded identifications  of momentum’s and constrains.

Everything is Light - Objectless Consciousness is not a cardboard Consciousness nor is it simply Samadhi - in these “realms” - abidance in them transforms all the subtle bodies. Not in abandon or trance - that would be to miss the mark in child’s play. Trance is nothing in this - this beingness is visceral Light (far higher than sex on any level - and in a freedom beyond bound)

If you look at certain tantric deities, the so called yab-yum couples... you may notice that they appear to be fully functional.

Those deities are supposed to be enlightened.

So, if you get tantric Buddhist enlightenment, you're given a lotus seat, various sun and moon disk mandalas and a consort for sex.

Maybe its like in the hare  Krishna movement ......   they beam about  and even seem , somehow, proud of , the story about Krishna dorking a hundred milkmaids  ...... but not THEM , they are not supposed to have sex ,  just admire their supposed emulant for having sex.

Anywayz .....  someone up there  ^ got  close to a very interesting observation .... just didnt take the next logical step to where their thought could lead  ......

Thanks for the Cultivation one and all, I was worried about being recycled, but now I know that I half a chance:

Nirvana The literal meaning is "blowing out" or "quenching." It marks the soteriological release from rebirths in saṃsāra. :)
