Being able to transmute anger to laughter is perhaps one of my most cultivated skills this lifetime. I spent years traveling and performing comedy myself with a troupe and solo. George Carlin - number one for me. He always struck me as more of an adroit social commentarian than a pure comedian, particularly his last three decades of work... and as I've come to read more Chuang Tze, I view George as a modern version of him in the way he uses humor to point out social absurdities. Also the crews of Seinfeld and Monty Python, those had more staying power, George Carlin ,also great , but that was a lot agreeing more than just hearty laughing. I used to play poker with Steve Martin prior to his fame - I’ve enjoyed his writing and when he first hit the scene he put all of us on the floor. Jonathan Winters was the best improv multiple personality master. No body prior to Prior quite like Prior. Nintendao Posted May 29, 2019 Although easily overlooked as juvenile buffoonery, I feel that Jim Varney's Ernest P. Worrell character embodies a certain kind of genius. Even evoking the philosophical foundations of an uncarved block of wood. Know what I mean, Vern? Honorable mention also to Paul "Pee Wee" Reubens, whose career crippling arrest for whacking it in an X-rated theater was in a way itself the ultimate act of comedy.
