lino Posted May 28, 2019 (edited) Do not use mantras in order to call anybody. If you don't know the correct translation then do not use the mantra. The hundred syllable mantra to call the Vajrasattva/Monkey King/Scorpion King is a sabotage. It provokes a fight with him. I didn't use it for one reason...it was to long to remember. Â Alowhatever did not have the power to defeat him. Edited May 28, 2019 by lino
Nungali Posted May 29, 2019 Agreed, do not use MANTRAS to call anybody - for that use evocation and invocation .  A mantra is more for a 'psychological force' ; to gain truth, reality, light, immortality, peace, love, knowledge, action, etc .  Not for calling up anybody. ilumairen Posted May 29, 2019 The hundred syllable mantra is part of the Bon Ngondro I have ever so slowly been accumulating, and I've had no issues with it.  And Nungali, some mantras are invocations.

Cheshire Cat Posted May 29, 2019 Mantras can be pretty much anything: invocations, incantations, spells, praises, etc...  If you don't receive a mantra from a Guru, then the results can be impredictables at times.
dawei Posted May 29, 2019 Wow... I quickly misread the first post... I thought mantra was mudra...  That might be like trying to reach out to a female deity and getting ilumairen instead  1

thelerner Posted July 27, 2019 I'm reminded of something Taomeow once wrote. I think it was Don't stare too long at Jupiter. Thinking of it since the planet has been unusually bright all summer. Guess everything likes a certain amount of privacy and it is the King after all.

I also read it not as a "mantra," but as a "mandala at first time."  It reminded me how once upon a time I read a description of one practice. Where a person contemplated a mandala in front of himself, then he projected a mandala into a certain part of his own body (by his own mind). Thus came the invitation of a certain deity within himself. Then it seemed a little creepy to me ... what if suddenly someone else would respond to the invitation. For example, someone from the world of "not good spirits". Edited August 15, 2019 by Pavel Karavaev
Earl Grey Posted August 17, 2019 (edited) I don't know what sources you use, but according to Thomas Ashley-Farrand, the wrong pronunciation stimulates different chakra petals, and making up your own mantras can cause you to literally burn since you don't know what they're doing.  Look up his books or consult one of the lineage teachers for advice.  www.sanskritmantra.com Edited August 17, 2019 by Earl Grey

EmeraldHead Posted August 19, 2019 To make his own mantra the yogi should be self-realised in the real world so he can see everything.
