Spotless Posted July 30, 2019 (edited) We have no problem with laws regarding truth in advertising. It is entirely legal to sue those engaged in false advertising - false claims and engineered misleading information. It is entirely possible to do the same regarding “Truth in reporting”. Many countries (outside the USA) not thought of as oppressive, authoritarian, socialist or communist have laws and regulations regarding “truth” - which is in some cases considerably in a grey area - but quite often not. We should consider national legislation in the USA regarding allowing litigation against false reporting. Edited July 31, 2019 by Spotless
thelerner Posted July 30, 2019 (edited) Who would we trust to decide it or set penalties? I suspect anyone wise enough, doesn't involve themselves in the muck of politics. Still, in the world of PACs and hidden money. I wish there was more transparency. I wish newspapers had a bi-partisan section on Facts & Perspective, where the two sides come to an agreement or they don't print. We already have some solid Fact Checking sites, course even those have there critics. Maybe truth is too valuable to weaponize. Spotless Posted July 31, 2019 We have many court precedents that support "complete freedom" of speech to the point of trashing that translation - it will probably be necessary to have a constitutional amendment. but with that said - so many legal roadblocks would be immediately set upon on such organizations such as Fox "News" and the Hannity/Tucker/Limbaugh funding drivers that the spew would be immediately tamped back and it is impossible to disregard the importance of looking at such legislation. Spotless Posted July 31, 2019 We should also look into the ending of Non-Profit status for any religious organization - and at least for now the revocation of non-profit status for existing but seriously offending members enjoying non-profit status but in serious and repetitive violation of the agreements they made in order to enjoy such status. It is a joke at this point among many of our most perverted consistent violators.
