It doesnt take too many brains to figure out ;  what is the  easiest and most frictionless way of simply moving heavy / large cargo today ?   Rail and boat .   Of course  track and roller is not as efficient as modern rail  but the same principles still applied back then .  The moving may not have been the main problem , transfer would be more difficult , eg, from 'drag'  or track and roller on to a barge and then off again .
