natural Posted August 28, 2020 G.I.T.'S. (or geese in training) are starting long range flight training, around here. Beginning with of course a series of local training flights. Very verbal instruction, not vocal, more watch this... do this... Seemingly no plan. East or West, North or South... always into the prevailing winds aloft. Both take offs and landings... Endurance training included, naturally. Form following function.
silent thunder Posted August 28, 2020 I grew up in Minnesota. North Star country. Geese everywhere. Man those great Northern Woods are incredible. Many of my earliest 'dates' with my wife (we never really dated) were driving off campus to the local damn and hanging out, where we'd feed the geese and get lost in each other's eyes... Now in California, we have just a few tribes that follow the coast on their long flights. Occasionally they get close enough and I most often hear them in the minutes before Dawn. How I love their voices! And such close families they have, the social connections are deep and their families are large. 1
liminal_luke Posted August 29, 2020 (edited) As a boy, one of my chores was to let the geese out of their pen in the mornings. Every day I´d open the pen door, stand back, and watch as twenty or so geese would clamber out and fly into the pond nearby. One especially cold morning the pond froze over. I still remember the distinct sense of surprise (can geese look surprised?) when the birds skidded on the ice.
