There are four main categories of posting.

  1. Promoting truth.
  2. Promoting sangha.*
  3. Promoting argument.
  4. Promoting self.

Quote

* A sangha is a community of friends practicing the dharma together in order to bring about and to maintain awareness. The essence of a sangha is awareness, understanding, acceptance, harmony and love. When you do not see these in a community, it is not a true sangha, and you should have the courage to say so. But when you find these elements are present in a community, you know that you have the happiness and fortune of being in a real sangha.

Another way of viewing categories of posting is that there are those emanating from

  1. Exiles (burdened or unburdened).
  2. Managers (burdened or unburdened).
  3. Firefighters (burdened or unburdened).
  4. The Self.

I like it and hope it holds true for certain threads and PPDs.   The board is a sangha to some, but not all.  We are a very diverse lot, encompassing more then the sangha ideals.

Yet I hope those ideals and the individuals who honor them are an example to the board of kindness and restraint.

A curious subset of Category 3 (Promoting Argument) that I recently discovered while experimenting with Twitter is Sealioning.

On Twitter it can be easily managed (like any other form of trolling) by anyone (even the most easily triggered) by muting or blocking the individual (& their allies), which made me wonder why Twitter bothers to employ moderators.

Kahlil Gibran' perspective on this topic.

Quote

AND THEN A scholar said, Speak of Talking.

And he answered, saying:
You talk when you cease to be at peace with your thoughts;
And when you can no longer dwell in the solitude of your heart you live in your lips, and sound is a diversion and a pastime.
And in much of your talking, thinking is half murdered.
For thought is a bird of space, that in a cage of words may indeed unfold its wings but cannot fly.
There are those among you who seek the talkative through fear of being alone.
The silence of aloneness reveals to their eyes their naked selves and they would escape.

And there are those who talk, and without knowledge or forethought reveal a truth which they themselves do not understand.

And there are those who have the truth within them, but they tell it not in words.
In the bosom of such as these the spirit dwells in rhythmic silence.
When you meet your friend on the roadside or in the market place, let the spirit in you move your lips and direct your tongue.
Let the voice within your voice speak to the ear of his ear;
For his soul will keep the truth of your heart as the taste of the wine is remembered
When the colour is forgotten and the vessel is no more.
