mwight Posted March 25, 2008 Can anyone here help me. I just found out a close friend is in near end stages of renal failure. What TCM treatments are used to strengthen kidneys? What other things are recommended. Please only reply if you have a good understanding of such things. Thanks to all in advance. -matt
karen Posted March 26, 2008 Hi Matt, For serious illness, I'd go straight to Dr. Hahnemann's complete medical system called Heilkunst, www.homeopathy.com. See my previous post about it here. Especially when there's no time to experiment with different methods in a hit-or-miss fashion, Heilkunst provides the broader understanding of where each of the various therapies fits, for a particular person, and which would be more effective at a particular time. It also treats with remedies that remove disease on the energetic level, which is something different from balancing energies. TCM treatment I'm sure would be greatly supportive and a good part of the whole program. Best wishes for your friend. -Karen
wudangspirit Posted March 26, 2008 A true help in this matter would be to go to a good TCM doctor and have them diagnose what is causing the problem. In TCM we treat the cause not the problem in most cases. I could give you suggestions but without actually seeing the person or knowing what the TCM diagnosis is it would only be guessing and you don't want to guess when it comes to people's lives. However, to build the kidneys (which may not even be the cause), you can get black (silk) chicken along with Dong Quai, red dates, and other various herbs (this is a common formula) and make a strong concentrated beverage. This will change the hormone levels and also strengthen the kidneys. However that is mostly for women. Biggest suggestion...go see a TCM doctor that is highly recommended. Tao Bless and sending qi to your friend... Wudangspirit both are good suggestions that have been given. wudang is right, in tcm we need to either see the patient or get alot of information to make an accurate dx. it is not like western medicine in that regard so we dont say ok you have this take that. there are many formulas that build the kidneys but as wudang said the kidneys may not be the actual cause according to TCM. and formulas (herbal) and point prescriptions will be different based on what the root cause is and what symptoms are appearing. so it can be complicated and i agree that they should see a tcm doctor in person. also when the kidney organ is actually involved the person should be monitored closely while on the herbal formula. so have the person go to someone that is board certified not only in acupuncture but also in chinese herbology. or any practicing doc from california that has taken that board. also, in some states we do acupuncture injection therapy with herbs, vitamins and homeopathics and that would be excellent especially the homeopathics as there are very little/if any at all, side effects, usually none (its all energetic anyway). you can look up homeotoxicology and acupuncture injection therapy for more information and what states allow it, right now its only a handful if that. You can't just "treat renal failure" in TCM, without a full diagnosis with pulse, tongue, bowel movement etc. etc. no "good" recommedation can be made. Get your friend to a Licensed Acupuncturist (assuming you are in the US). Avoid "Certified Acupuncturist"s as they are usually Chiropractors with a couple of weekend courses in point location, and know nothing about TCM, least of all diagnosis. Best wishes for your friend. mwight Posted March 26, 2008 (edited) Yes sorry I figured it would require that. He is a bit stubborn I don't know if I could drag him to one. When he was 20 he gave one of his kidneys to his dying father. His father rejected it and both his father and kidney died. He really has let himself go after his wife left him, he eating way too much fried food, not exercising, depression. He is extremely overweight, and has had many complications do to that. I feel bad for him, I wish there was something I could do to help. I've discussed exercise, diet changes, neigong, and meditation, spring forest qigong, etc to help him get back in control of himself. He seems interested but won't follow any serious regimen. I have recommended green tea extract, cinnamon, and b vitamins, as well as lots of fresh fruits, and vegetables, and restrictions on meats and cheeses, and greasy foods, and carbohydrates. He doesn't seem to like the idea of that too much. I just wish he would care more about himself I guess, anyway... thanks everyone for the advice. -matt Edited March 26, 2008 by mwight

karen Posted March 26, 2008 Hi Matt, All we can do is be available to offer suggestions.. and when we feel the urge to push them toward what WE think is best, we get to look ar our own attachments! That can be a great gift to us. There can be higher spiritual purposes weaving through this. -Karen
