dwai Posted February 1, 2021 (edited) https://www.inc.com/justin-bariso/tim-cook-may-have-just-ended-facebook.html Fascinating stuff going down in the Big Tech space...I think Apple's position is one of strength. FB has no business trying to force Apple to release user data. While I'm certain Apple's position is not entirely altruistic...the value of what Cook has said stands on its own merit. The Big Tech over-reach and commoditization of social media users is an alarming phenomenon, along with the fact that polarization is being accelerated algorithmically -- echo chambers getting louder, and freedom of expression squashed. thelerner Posted February 1, 2021 Not exactly the end of Facebook, but hopefully a wakeup call to stop intrusive data over-reach. They can do it voluntarily and intelligently or if the over reach keeps up, they'll invite in legislation, that could (somehow) split them up. Cooks speech was well done. The pioneer creators and users of the internet were 'naive', at least the users were. The new generation cares about data control. If it's not done by the US, it'll be done by Europe and that splinters access.

With blockchain, internet platforms will become greatly democratized, decentralized, and lead to a decommodification of users. https://www.leewayhertz.com/blockchain-social-media-platforms/
Victor Posted February 13, 2021 Very interesting topic. Cook's ideas are very similar to this guy's idea (The title is a bit of a clickbait but Jaron Lanoer has some very good points, besides being extremely prominent in the field)
