At the time of Laozi, ziran meant: not ‘relying on/existing according to’ anything external.
It referred to ‘that what’s behind it all’, the unknown source/origin of everything/the universe.

And that’s how it’s used in the DDJ.

See:

Totally Rad... I didn't know that , It's a pleasant one. Thankyou.

Ziranmen is an interesting concept for Martialarts.

My interest is in reading the oldest available copy of the DDJ, for that I need the original meaning of 自然

Possibly a contemporary Daoist finds the original meaning of 自然 irrelevant; … For them possibly only the current meaning is what’s relevant; it being about ‘culture/belief-system’ and not about historical accuracy.

No I find it fascinating, thanks fro pointing it out, it always helps to know more then it can help us with further digging. It is great you share, I'd like to know more like this to be honest,,,

As an example I took what you said and had a further look. I found this, which colors what you are saying ever more...

Original Meaning of Ziran

In the context of Laozi and early Chinese philosophy:

  • Ziran literally means "self-so" or "so of itself," derived from the characters 自 (zi) meaning "self" and 然 (ran) meaning "so" or "thus."
  • In its original use, it referred to a state or condition that arises without dependence on external forces, existing purely of its own accord.
  • Ziran was a description of the Tao (道) in its essence—the ultimate source or origin that governs the universe in an effortless and uncontrived manner.
  • It was closely aligned with the mystery of the Tao, emphasizing that the universe operates naturally and spontaneously, without artificial interference or deliberate intent.

In Laozi’s Daodejing, ziran is not merely "natural" in the modern sense of being found in nature but reflects an ontological principle: the way things fundamentally are when they align with the Tao.

“ziran”, it’s a necessary ontological ground. Ziran literally means, “follow your own nose in this’. As no one knows, one has to make up one’s own mind.

The DDJ is about the way you yourself fundamentally are when you align with the Tao. :)

Interesting.

Googling around a bit, I bumped into this, “G‑d looked into the Torah and created the world.” Baffling. Then who wrote the Torah?

The Torah exists with God always and forever in a sort of lexicon of ideas called "Ein-Soph".
