I think the short answer to the question as to why people get bent out of shape over gender is due to attachment to Identity. It's one of the three types of attachment that the Buddha spoke about.

Maddie, out of curiousity I checked the data for the US and my own country Norway. We have 0.03%, compared to yours 0.5%. You have a a lot of people ages 13-17 as well (1.5%).

 

Among U.S. adults, 0.5% (about 1.3 million adults) identify as transgender. Among youth ages 13 to 17 in the U.S., 1.4% (about 300,000 youth) identify as transgender. 
 

How do you interpet this?

I think it's more than that because the other individual's identity is not being being challenged.  Being confronted with a trans-person has no bearing on how the individual views themself.  Nothing has changed about their cis-gendered identity after the interaction.

 

( I'm excluding trans-folk who have not come to terms with their own identity yet ).

Because it challenges the patriarchy. No one cares if a girl wears boy clothes. But as soon as a boy puts on a dress people lose their minds.

A lot of people are worried.  For many different reasons.  The extent varies, naturally.  The women in my family are very troubled. Deeply concerned.  Distraught.  Angry.   The initial shock seems to have passed.  I'm trying not to interfere.

*Edit: this isn't exactly an interpretation but I think when you see on a very small percentage of the population is transgendered and makes the fact that people freak out over it seem ridiculous.

Of the three things the Buddha said that the mind attaches to, sensory pleasures, identity, and permanence, gender definitely falls in the category of identity. The things people cling to they tend to get reactive about, and the stronger they cling to them the more reactive they get.

my little country is now ruled by some fascist idiots who are looking for loopholes in the law to deport immigrants with dutch nationality. I've no doubt about the ways they're gonna treat people who are not heterosexual once they decide it's time to do away with us.

The naivety of so many people is honestly shocking to me. I wonder if it is genuine ignorance or fear disguised as denial .

Another reason I think people don't like trans women specifically reflects the built in misogamy and sexism of our culture. Women are seen as "less than" so to "become one" (not that its a conscious decision but people are ignorant) is seen as a humiliation.

It´s impossible to get rid of trans people or gay people.  Yes, individuals can be killed.  But as long as people are having babies some of them will be trans and some gay.  Personally, I think this is a good thing.  It makes life more interesting for everybody and I believe that LGBT folk bring something special to humanity.  

 

I´m pretty sure you think I don´t support you because I´m glad that Trump won -- but that´s not true.  I believe that people have a right, and perhaps a duty, to be their authentic selves and pursue happiness.  I´m glad that many transgendered people have the courage to come out and live as the gender that feels right to them.  I know it´s difficult and respect the guts it takes to go through the process.  If the election were only about LGBT issues, I would of supported Kamala.  Unfortunately, there was a lot more at stake and not just the price of eggs.  

 

Several of my gay friends in the Palm Springs area are, like you, considering moving out of the country because of Trump.  They think it will be dangerous to stay in the US.  While I could be wrong, I don´t think their fears will materialize.  Nobody is going to be thrown into camps.  Adult trans people will retain access to gender-affirming medical care, at least in states like California that will fiercely fight the fed if necessary.  People in Palm Springs are overwhelmingly accepting of gays and transgendered folks and that´s not going to change anytime soon.  The overall trend in the US has been towards increasing acceptance.  It´s been pretty miraculous, actually.  I believe the trend will continue.

I don't want you to think I'm singling you out. I've been disappointed with a lot of the lgbtq+ community since the election, including even trans people. I don't think people realize what is going on and what is planned.
