Nintendao Posted August 19 (edited) 🙃🌍 Quote All magnets have two poles, where lines of magnetic flux enter one pole and emerge from the other pole. By analogy with Earth's magnetic field, these are called the magnet's "north" and "south" poles. Before magnetism was well understood, the north-seeking pole of a magnet was defined to have the north designation, according to their use in early compasses. However, opposite poles attract, which means that as a physical magnet, the magnetic north pole of the Earth is actually on the southern hemisphere. In other words, if we establish that true geographic north is north, then what we call the Earth's north magnetic pole is actually its south magnetic pole since it attracts the north magnetic pole of other magnets, such as compass needles. The direction of magnetic field lines is defined such that the lines emerge from the magnet's north pole and enter into the magnet's south pole. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_magnetic_pole#Polarity Edited August 19 by Nintendao

Nungali Posted August 19 I am sorry but that is RUBBISH ... there is no 'north or south pole of a magnet , there is a positive or negative pole on a magnet and a north or south pole of the Earth's magnetic field relating to mapping convention. . I think what IS surprising to some is that the north pole of the Earths EM field is negative ( receptive ) and the south positive (discharging ) . Think of it this way .... the Earth has not changed its poles around to suit a compass ! The end of the compass needle that POINTS north is the opposite polarity of the North pole and is attracted by it . Its the colored part of the needle that some assumed to have a 'north charge ' . or instead we could insist a compasses colored end of the needle IS 'north' ( that is not merely pointing north ) and there fore we need to insist that the north pole is the south pole .
Nungali Posted August 19 (edited) However ... the south pole IS Earth's 'crown chakra ' . What way is ' up ' for a sphere in space . Again, more mapping convention . Also its why , when we lay out a whole (good ) tarot deck in its mode of representing the 'cosmos ' * the princes rule the 4 quadrants around the North pole - 'the end ' of the energy cycle before re-absorption . And the Aces rule 4 quadrants around the south pole - aces being the initial first form / output of the 4 elemental energies . * going from S. pole( aces) up through S. tropic (Knights), equator, ( Queens ) N. tropic ( Princes) , N. pole (Princesses ) with elemental attributions by longitude . The Earth itself is represented by the three elemental trumps that make up matter . Out from the earth are the orbits of the planetary trumps , beyond that the astrological sign trumps and the minor cards 2 - 10 in each suit being the astrological decans ( of 10 degrees each ) , each trump ruling three of the decans giving those three cards a cardinal, fixed or mutable mode . { Note , in the images above of the Earth's GMF , note for north and south , a line is shown going straight out , and not curving back to the other pole . Where are they going and to what are they 'connecting ' to ? } Edited August 19 by Nungali
Sahaja Posted August 20 Interesting. Same as King Wen bagua sequence that has south at the top.
Taomeow Posted August 20 Taoists associate South with the sun -- the ultimate yang direction. The opposite pole, accordingly, is North -- yin direction. Which is why taoist maps always show South on top where the sun is (overhead, not underfoot) whether they map the earth or the human body. (The head is yang/South on top in relation to the feet/North on the bottom.) All of (real) feng shui is organized according to this principle, as well as all organs of the human body. Which makes the human-cosmos relationship palpable and intuitive. It is still not uncommon for a Chinese patient to complain to the doctor that she feels pain and tension "in the southeast of the body." Or for a baffled tourist to get route directions in the street along the lines of, "walk three blocks to the west, turn north, walk a few blocks till you see a side street going northwest, turn there and once you hit the intersection, go southwest, then on the eastern corner you'll find the museum you're looking for."
Nungali Posted August 20 I thought most northern hemisphere people would . Here of course solar orientation is north and 'our feet' are in the south . I have never been to the north hemisphere . Its too weird and upside down for me What, you face the ecliptic and the Sun is rising on your right hand and setting on your left ? And midnight the 'Sun is in the north' ? There had been a lot of elemental juggling here (south hemi ) for pagans with their elements and directions , some , mostly Wiccans , just copied the northern arrangement . Some just reversed north and south . Here , we localized it . Fire north , water east (pacific Ocean ) south air ( southerly winds and 'magnetic jetstream' ) and west earth ( a big giant 'island' chunk of it ) . There was another tradition that was 'celestial' relating to the elemental attribution of astrological signs . And another 'traditional / magical ' one that was supposed to be related to kabbalah , but is actually related to wind directions in the western Mediterranean (hot wind from the south, damp wind from the west, etc . )

I think there ought to be a mirror system for the southern hemisphere because the sun is still over your head, not under your feet, in either hemisphere. But whether it exists or not I don't know -- all of taoism happened in the northern hemisphere, so maybe no one bothered with the mirror system. (Except for Wang Liping who specifically traveled to the South Pole to try to figure out what's up with qi down under.) 2 hours ago, Nungali said: Here , we localized it . Taoists start separating the sheep from the goats by determining which ones are yang and which ones are yin, take it from there. So, yang is up/hot in relation to yin, yin is down/cold in relation to yang. Fire, which is more yang than any other of the five types of qi ('elements"), is hot -- like the sun which is hot ( and up over our heads) -- like it's hotter in the Northern hemisphere the farther you move South. So, hot=Fire=South. Your down under system is baffling because the sun is still up over your heads and still hot, but the South pole is cold. Perhaps the yin-yang flip occurs at the equator (as it should -- extreme yang flips into yin), so you are truly and verily upside down.
