My neighbor built a big shed / 'carport' for her bus .  I explained to her how we did it here for the last 30 years ... but she wanted a special 'council approved '   legal one .   It probably cost her 20G more .

We would dig a hole with tractor post hole digger , put pole , lift pole in with the  tractor lifter , brace it and  attach a small work platform to it  ( spike on the platform, chain around the back so it can slide up but not  down)  put a ladder against the pole (tie it on )  ,  get up there and start chainsawing, attaching block and tackle lift a beam and go onto the next one .

The builders she got in   got machinery in to put the poles in then built a scaffold around the whole thing  ( that cost 3.5 G in rental ! ) a safety net , wore harnesses  attached to   ropes and straps all over the place  .  They where no higher than what I could jump down onto the ground from .

yea it's crazy what some contractors charge.  I got a bid for about $6,000.00 to dig an 18" deep ditch for a natural gas line, so I decided to rent a ditch witch machine for a couple hundred bucks and did the job myself,  (with some help from my neighbor and sand fill-in help from my wife ) that went great until I hit some boulders and had to rent an electric powered jack hammer to bust them up.  I still probably saved $5,500.00 on that part of the job and probably another $2,000+ on labor for the furnace install which I also did.  (very carefully)

for those that have never used a ditch witch its like a big chain saw but for dirt.  Below is a one person backyard machine but they also have huge industrial ones for digging much wider and deeper ditches

wouldn’t it have been cheaper just to get the wife to dig the whole thing?

I was visiting a seaside village once  and came across a classic scene ; a small fishing boat in a make shift docks for repair , an old weather beaten sailor leaning against a pole , smoking a pipe and whittling a bit of wood .  " What a great life" I commented to him , " Out in nature , living free ."

"Oh , its not always like that "  he responded "  I am married to a harsh mistress , one day calm and placid, then ,  just when you think you can rest, without warning it can turn on you in  fury and lash you so you have to fight for your very life , seeking refuge  before you are dragged down to her horrible depths where all sorts of devouring death awaits ! "

" I know what you mean ," I told him , " You are talking about the sea ! "

" No, the wife , she is over there under the boat scrapping off barnacles . "
