Nungali Posted March 6 A cyclone is knocking on my front door . Had near a half meter of rain in two days . Creeping slowly towards the coast more each day .
Nungali Posted March 10 Rain finally eased off . You should see the river and bridge crossing just down valley from my place (and the only road out ) ... ferocious ! Been flooded in since Thursday . Probably another three days to go ? A patrol chopper circled overhead yesterday , I gave them a thumbs up ..... then I went and got a massage off my neighbor and we had tamarind chicken for dinner So its been all good . But, after past experience, river dropping below the bridge might be just the first obstacle on the way out . Nungali Posted March 10 Still flooded in . The place is a sog fest . But the garden likes it, the exotics have shot up and all the tree ferns and varieties of ginger I have around the cabin are enjoying it . Tonight's exotic meal will be courtesy of Syria ; 'Fateh Makdous ' . Fried ground lamb with onions pin nuts and cumin mixed with pieces of flat bread and drizzled with a yogurt tahini garlic sauce, toasted under the grill then sprinkled with chopped parsley and barberry . After that , its open up the cans of baked beans . ... after inspecting the cupboard I found a packet with coco in it another with a bit of coconut and some glace cherries , hmmm - chocolate and cherry slice . I am predicting that tomorrow the bridge can be crossed .... and then ; onward through the devastation . After I get over ' our ' bridge ( assuming it isn't damaged - one time it washed away ) there is another two , then I get to the end of the road, where it meets a main road - 'Waterfall Way ' ( by its name, you can see why it closes in heavy rain ) then see how far I can get .

Nungali Posted March 11 I heard cars go past this morning , that's a good sign . I'll be off soon to survey the route . We should have a new type of beach at the river , its constantly changed over the years due to floods . Many years back a flood deposited a H U G E long tree trunk with rootball attached into the wide pooled section of the river on a bend between rapids that we use as our swimming spot . The front curved up like a prow and the back of the rootball was like a big throne with a seat in it .... the perfect 'slave ship' . One would sit in the throne and the others stand on the trunk and pole them along with bamboo . First the kids , then the adults would ambush them, tip them off and take over the boat and take off around the corner . Then come back and the kids would be hiding along the bank, up in trees and then they would ambush us and steal the boat . many a months fun was had with that . Eventually another flood washed it away . Also , along the banks one can scout for native orchids, elkhorns and staghorns dislodged from trees and decorate your garden with them . Staghorn ; Elkhorn and get some river sand ( for fish tank ) and river pebbles and stones to redo my garden paths (usually banked up on the road near bridges ) .

Taomeow Posted Friday at 12:57 AM I wanted to buy a medicine for off-label use that is FDA approved and not a controlled substance but is by prescription only here, while it's OTC in some less-pharma-captured countries (not less corrupt, mind you, just differently corrupt.) Made the mistake of trying to buy it from India. I signed up via my computer. They wanted my phone number for verification. I made the mistake of giving it. I am now getting offers from a dozen sellers from India every day -- by email, by phone, and on WhatsApp. Getting rid of those messages is very boring. And I'm reluctant to buy from any of them because I don't know which, if any, aren't going to scam me.
Nungali Posted Friday at 06:24 AM Would you like to purchase a saree guard for your Royal Enfield ?

Although the closest thing to a saree I've ever worn was a Queen of the Night outfit in a school show. Thinking back to that thingie of flowing black silk and gauze, I can imagine that riding a motorcycle while wearing it would indeed have required a saree guard, plus a couple bodyguards. 1

Taomeow Posted 22 hours ago (edited) 2 hours ago, Cobie said: νύχτα still is the modern Greek word for ‘night’. (Dusting off my Proto-Indo-European to keep the thread true to its boring title): it comes from the PIE root nókʷts and retains reminders of that origination in pretty much all European languages. What is amazing though is what they call the night in some languages that nave nothing to do with PIE -- e.g., ntuj in Hmong (Hmong-Mien, Southeast Asia), nöi in Nias (Austronesian, Indonesia), nath in Nuer (Nilo-Saharan, South Sudan). This of course might be just a coincidence -- but where it isn't, in languages that are definitely (or possibly, or not entirely inconceivably) related, I like to hunt for those consonants (or combos of two) that behave like "kernels" (retaining their meaning or the gist of it across times, languages, or a given language's vocabulary). Those that remain resilient to the systematic changes consonants undergo over times, languages, or a given language's vocabulary. "N" of the "night" is definitely one of those in PIE. And then I like to contemplate the cosmic reasons why, the possible laws that make a sound get associated with a phenomenon. It's like hunting for some "fundamental" on "natural" language, the language that commands and transforms reality if you know how to use it. (I believe there was a time many shamans did. There's faint echoes of that language proficiency in things like, e.g., chants and mantras -- if only they weren't fake as they often are these days.)
