A cyclone is knocking on my front door .     Had near a half meter of rain in two days .

Creeping slowly towards the coast more each day .

Rain finally eased off .  You should  see the river and bridge crossing just down valley from my place (and the only road out )  ... ferocious !   Been flooded in since Thursday .  Probably another three days to go  ?   A patrol chopper circled overhead yesterday , I gave them a thumbs up   ..... then I  went and got a massage off my neighbor  and we had tamarind chicken for dinner  ;)

So its been all good  .

But, after past experience, river dropping below the bridge might be just the first obstacle  on the way out .

Still flooded in .   The place is a sog fest . But the garden likes it, the exotics have shot up  and all the tree ferns and  varieties of ginger I have around the cabin are enjoying it .

Tonight's exotic meal will be courtesy of Syria ;    'Fateh Makdous '  .

Fried  ground lamb with onions  pin nuts and cumin  mixed with pieces of flat bread  and drizzled with a yogurt tahini garlic sauce, toasted under the grill then sprinkled with  chopped parsley and barberry .

After that , its  open up the cans of baked beans .   ...  after inspecting the cupboard I found a packet with coco in it  another with a bit of coconut and some glace cherries , hmmm  - chocolate and cherry slice .

I am predicting that tomorrow the bridge can be crossed  .... and then  ; onward through the devastation .   After I get over ' our '

bridge  ( assuming it isn't damaged - one time it washed away )  there is another two ,  then  I get to the end of the road, where it meets a  main road - 'Waterfall Way '   ( by its name, you can see why it closes in heavy rain ) then see how far I can get .

I heard cars go past this morning , that's a good sign .  I'll be off soon to survey the route .  We should have a new type of beach at the river ,  its constantly changed over the years due to floods .

Many years back a flood deposited a H U G E  long  tree trunk  with rootball attached   into the wide pooled section of the river  on a bend between rapids  that we use as our swimming spot .   The front curved up like a prow and the back of the rootball was like a big throne with a seat in it .... the perfect 'slave ship' .   One would sit in the throne and the others stand on the trunk and pole them along with  bamboo .  First the kids , then the adults would ambush them, tip them off and take over the boat  and take off around the corner . Then come back  and the kids would be hiding along the bank, up in trees  and then they would ambush us and steal the boat .  many a months fun was had with that . Eventually another flood washed it away .

Also , along the banks one can scout for native orchids, elkhorns and staghorns  dislodged from trees and decorate your garden with them .

and   get some river sand  ( for fish tank ) and river pebbles and stones to redo my  garden paths  (usually banked up on the road near bridges ) .
