Summertime Tumo

Recommended Posts

So, the Yoga of Inner Heat obviously has practical application in freezing cold weather. But, as I bake in the Australian summer, I have to ask, is there a comparable process for dealing with extreme heat?

Anybody hear of such a thing? Or, better still, have experience of such a thing?

There’s a yoga practice called five fires.

It's fun because Tummo has little to do with fighting cold, but it has reverted to just that silly utility which is only a secondary effect.

Check any tantra for details, for example the 6 dharmas of Naropa. You wont find any relevance there for tummno creating heat... just a side effect. The real utility of tummo is making the winds to enter and stay in the central channel for complete release and enlightenment.

So if you want to fight heat I will recommend AC. It's silly to practice at this level just for temperature changes.

Why is then famous for that? Well, because the change in temp can be mesured but your progression on the Dharma no. And because all the hype of mr Hof and others at youtube.

For example:

>According to Lama Yeshe though, the heat is not necessarily the goal of the practice,

>Don’t practice tummo for heat, practice it to refine your bodhicitta and be of benefit to others. Heat is a distant secondary. Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn’t.

Etc...

Is like having a gun for the most supreme objective and use it instead of a blanket.

Anyway that wasnt the question at all, sorry... and I think I'm off-topic but its a internet hype worth addressing

Other fragments from the book of G.H. Mulling about the 6 yogas of Naropa:

A Western vipasyana meditator once commented to me that the inner heat yogas
were very important to the Tibetans, due to Tibet's cold climate, but that they
weren't as relevant to Westerners, whose houses have central heating. What he
failed to appreciate is that the physical heat is just a side-effect of the practice,
and not the purpose or function of it. The inner heat doctrine is engaged in order
to gain control over the subtle bodily energies and chemical processes, as a
means of melting the drops and giving rise to the tantric busses. This ecstasy
then acts as the rocket fuel of the tantric space adventure. Control over the
physical processes, such as the heating functions, are encompassed by the
process, but are not the primary aim of it.

That's why mr Hof isnt doing tummo, for example. He's just controlling temp.
