Yoda Posted June 15, 2005 I don't know much more than that they exist. Found a cool one recently... rest your hands palms over the middle of the thigh. Play around with the various positions, but work that area. I'm finding this to be a very grounded mudra and I'm recalling that some warrior traditions use this mudra in their sitting and standing practices. Samurai, Ancient Egyptians, Pacific Islanders, the New Zealand indians come to mind. -Yoda

Tenguzake Posted June 15, 2005 There are a set of mudras that are found within Ninjutsu and some other Koryu Japanese arts like the Tenshin Katori Shinto Ryu. They are derived from Shingon and Tendai Buddhism and basically are one of the parts of the San Mitsu or triple secret of coordinating thought, word & deed. In practice what is done is to connect a specific visulization with a specific mantra or spell and with a mudra to bring about a certain state of consciousness that aids in the completion of some goal. To develop the mudra as a trigger for a specific state of consciousness, the visualization and breathing exercises or chanting of the mudra is done first to bring about the state of consciousness and the mudra is connected to it. Eventually like Pavlov's dogs and their bell, doing the mudra will bring on the visualization and mental state associated with it. Modern Bujinkan Ninjutsu practitioners do not practice these for the most part. Stephen Hayes, I think, still teaches them in his Quest Center/Toshindo schools. Steve at some point was ordained as a Tendai preist. The use of a mudra as a trigger is something that was "rediscovered" by the founders of NLP. They refer to the same process of creating a desired mental state and setting a trigger to bring that state about as "setting an anchor". An anchor can be virtually anything, but is usually some sort of touch. It should be a touch that is not something like a handshake, where the person will constantly be getting similar touches, but something unusual where the anchor will not be likely to be destroyed. It could be a certain pressure touch on the shoulder or the elbow or tugging your left ear a certain way, etc. When setting the anchor, only apply the trigger as the desired state is increasing. Once it starts to wane, release the anchor. You don't want to anchor the desired state getting weaker. Jan Fries in Living Midnight uses the NLP approach to set some anchors to bring about trance states associated with the Taoist Immortals. In his Cauldron of the Gods, he uses the same method for establishing trance states associated with certain trees. His material is great if you are attracted to things magickal. It is possible to set anchors in others as well. I think there is some discussion of the setting of anchors to anchor good feelings in a person you are trying to seduce at www.fastseduction.com. I hope this is helpful. Be Genki, Tenguzake
Trunk Posted June 15, 2005 does anyone here use mudras, know of any good sources for info on them... especially how they are connected with the meridians? i know some about them but not alot... though i do tham all the time and wonder what it is my hands are so drawn to doing. If you search Amazon.com for "mudra", there are several good resources that result. I have at times been fascinated with hand postures (my hands liked to, wanted to, posture), but too lazy to really research much at the time. Think I'll read a bit now. Lozen Posted June 15, 2005 Have you met Jan Fries? Back when I was a witch in England I bought the book directly off of Mogg from Mandrake Publishing with money I made playing my guitar in the rain in Oxford on this commercial street that did not allow cars. I was playing anti-capitalist songs with my back pressed against this corporate jewelry shoppe. Oh, I miss the good life. Anyways, I have all kinds of stories about Mogg. Heh heh heh. Lozen Posted June 15, 2005 Curling up my fingers and touching my thumb to index finger or thumb to middle finger is phenomenal especially when running... What else... not quite a mudra but crossing your arms across your chest like when you're pretending to be invisible in bad live action role playing games like Vampire really works to turn down the volume on yr chakras. also thumb nails to back of ring finger is good for invisibility. i've used it on city buses. and that's my $.02. probably less than that, even, maybe like a half a cent. Be Genki, Tenguzake 4536[/snapback] thanks to everyone! anchors are used by mentalists and other such performers as well.... usually to be able to control a desired response to an effect they do.... in a taoist context the mudras are connected to the meridians..... for details just check the meridians in your fingers and hands... thats all i know. im hoping to find examples of how people put them to use. and thanks for those links. At the end of the day our schedules didn't synch up, so it didn't happen. Since then my schedule has been too busy to go back to Mogg and to try to set up a time to do it. I'd love to meet him though. When were you in Oxford? I had a friend that was over there a couple of years ago doing an MBA at Magdalene. He is one of the capitalists. Please share your stories. Lozen Posted June 16, 2005 I studied in Oxford in '02 to '03, but not at the University. Just at the town. I have a couple Chelsea Clinton stories, too. (Nothing too good.) I was studying celtic shamanism with John Matthews and Mogg wouldn't let me proofread the Fries work because he said their was a conflict of interest. He's an interesting man. He gave me this free little booklet on mystical places of Oxford. He looks straight out of a Harry Potter movie...long sort of greasy hair, it's hard to explain. I remember he told me all kinds of things about the Matthews (Caitlin Matthews was cooler, I should've studied with her) that were sort of cryptic and didn't add up, and when I tried to verify them (which he HAD to know I was gonna do, since John was leading us through journeying we had to have trust established) he just kind of laughed, rolled his eyes, and said Mogg had a tendency to exaggerate. I said I had decided (based on other things) that Mogg was just a flat out liar, and he laughed a lot and said he was saying the same thing in British. I remember when Mogg pissed off one of the witches (a really well known witch with many books out but I forget her pen name) during an esbat ceremony becase he broke the circle, and I was the only one who would call him on it, and he said he didn't realize he was doing it. The other witches didn't believe him, but I did. He was that oblivious sometimes... He was running a weird group called the Black Cauldron or something like that. My Wicca teacher was attending regularly but I decided not to go. We would see each other once a week at the pagan pub moots at this lovely pub with five zillion different kinds of herbal wine. I am glad I got out of Wicca. Prayer is better anyway. You may not get what you want, but you always get what you need. Anyways, there's more, but that's probably all I'm gonna say publically. Tenguzake Posted June 16, 2005 '02 & '03 is when my friend was over there. He told me he used to run into Chelsea regularly on campus. From his stories it sounds like Oxford is a great town. Your Pagan Pub Moot's sound like fun. Thanks for the story. Be Genki, Tenguzake
Lozen Posted June 16, 2005 I ran into Chelsea a couple of times. She would speak with her hands around the sides of her mouth so only the person with her could hear her. My boyfriend at the time was studying in Oxford and was frustrated with all the extra security. Chelsea's boyfriend was this different guy than the one they said in the paper. I did meet a guy who she hit on when she was really drunk at this pub, though. Oh and she'd get in trouble for putting her feet on the tables in the library. Chelsea was protesting an anti-war meeting I was at. Her friends tried to heckle the speakers but it only got the crowd more riled up and got them all in the paper. They brought an American flag to hold up way in the front of the room and were asked to leave... She was good and polite though and bought every socialist paper that was offered to her. She made it a point to leave in the middle of the meeting. She's actually really pretty in real life. But as my friend in Oxford put it, "she wears daft shoes."
