Yoda Posted August 5, 2008 I bet not so many people actually died but since it does seem like this spontaneous neikung system was inspired by high stress conditions I'm sure there were some who used it as a convenient means of egress: http://dsc.discovery.com/news/2008/08/01/d...th-mystery.html
voidisyinyang Posted August 5, 2008 Brilliant -- not sure why Kunlun wasn't mentioned though.
styrofoamdog Posted August 5, 2008 It sounds very similar to what goes on in some pentecostal and evangelical churches ("speaking in tongues", "being slain in the spirit", etc.). The power of suggestion, coupled with stress or poor living conditions can have a big effect on some people. America: the new Medieval Europe!

America: the new Medieval Europe! well, the second page mentions how some people where dancing against their will so it's definitely not the power of suggestion that was at work here; not to mention don't you think they'd stop dancing before they died if it was as simple as that? there are ghettos in every us city but hundreds of it's resident don't get uncontrollably boogie for days. voidisyinyang Posted August 5, 2008 Well I would say it's similar to the HERD STAMPEDE which is closely related to the mob riots in the U.S. inner cities (biggest case was WATTS in '68 I believe). Anyway you can see how the fear and anger just multiplies and reinforces itself -- and then it's focused on some sort of "fall guy" -- be it toppling a statue, burning a bldg, tar and feathering someone, the witch-hunt, etc. You see these same dynamics on web forums all the time -- where the anger and fear builds up against someone perceived as weak. It's just basic ANGER DISPLACEMENT behavior -- the expert on this is Professor Robert Sapolsky. Consider the TARENTELLA which was another "dance plague" in Italy done by women. It was cured ONLY BY A CERTAIN TYPE OF MUSIC. So we can see the power of sound to exorcise the lower emotions of the body. It could very well be that in these cases of "dance plague" or "koro", etc. were due to people listening to the WRONG type of music. Most Western music actually induces fear and anger and sadness.
