Stigweard Posted September 30, 2008 I love riddles so I thought I'd see if a riddle thread would endure. RULES: Whoever answers the riddle correctly earns the right to post a new riddle, else of course they can pass and whatever riddle gets posted first becomes the next to solve. Riddle #1: What has no eyes, no ears, and no mouth yet always tells the truth?

Taomeow Posted September 30, 2008 (edited) I entered the mirror before I saw the other entry. Must have mirrored it in my mind. Here's a classic sophism: A man from Crete asserts all men from Crete are liars and always tell lies no matter what they say. Is he telling the truth? thelerner Posted October 1, 2008 I entered the mirror before I saw the other entry. Must have mirrored it in my mind. Here's a classic sophism: A man from Crete asserts all men from Crete are liars and always tell lies no matter what they say. Is he telling the truth? Is he telling the truth? No. Some men on Crete are liars. Michael I've been to Crete, fun island.
Taomeow Posted October 1, 2008 (edited) Is he telling the truth? No. Some men on Crete are liars. If he, a man from Crete, is not telling the truth, he's confirming the truth of what he's saying, i.e. he is lying. And what he, a Cretan, is saying is that Cretans don't tell the truth. If it's a lie, then he, a man from Crete who says men from Crete don't tell the truth, is lying. Which confirms the truth of what he is saying about men from Crete. And so on. It's a paradox, see... Stigweard Posted October 1, 2008 (edited) If he, a man from Crete, is not telling the truth, he's confirming exactly what he's saying. And what he, a Cretan, is saying is that Cretans don't tell the truth. If it's the truth, then he, a man from Crete who says men from Crete don't tell the truth, is lying. Which confirms the truth of what he is saying about men from Crete. And so on. It's a paradox, see... I like it ... reminds me of the scene with two doors from the "Labyrinth".
