Blissmusic Posted May 21, 2010 "The source of all problems is the mind. Thoughts arise, you identify with your thoughts and that defines your experience. So many thoughts arise without you even knowing it. So many worries and troubles constantly arising and repeating and although you are not conscious of them, you are identified with them. You are identified with the stress of it, the conflict of it and so that is your experience. Say you have to get your toilet fixed. You know you have to get your toilet fixed. But the thought repeats itself as a conflict until you resolve it. It sits on your shoulders like a hundred pound weight telling you life is not the way it is supposed to be until the toilet is fixed and then it goes away. And then the plumber says "I can't come until next Wednesday" and that hurts because you know you will have to carry around that thought, that conflict of "I have to get the toilet fixed" for another week. And there are thousands of them arising so fast! Toilet fixed, dentist appointment late on rent, your high school sweetheart dumped you for the school bully. You wake up in the morning from a state of deep peace and freedom from all identity and boom the mind looks for something to identify with and there's the broken toilet, the rent bill the high school sweetheart and the bully and a thousand others within seconds. And that's who you think you are, that is how you perceive life. Sure you get the good thoughts too but then that creates conflict and stress. You want one thought over the other; one experience over the other. And so the remedy is not to try and have one thought over the other, but to stop the identification with thinking all together. Whether through witnessing thoughts or placing your attention on what is here beyond thinking, it is to break that addiction to identifying with thoughts and rest as your natural state of being. To stop allowing thoughts to dictate your experience and instead discover what is truly here beyond the thinking. To realize your natural state. Because your natural state is love, is peace, is bliss. Not some emotional experience on the surface but every cell of existence vibrating as bliss. And if you can taste that once, then you can do it twice. Then you can rest in your natural state for longer periods of time before being pulled back into thinking. And eventually, the duality between thoughts and peace ceases to exist. You begin to experience thoughts as energy. You experience the very nature of thought itself. Which is unconditional bliss. It's like you stop being involved with the lyrics to the song and just enjoy the music. The bliss of the music. The toilet still needs to be fixed but you're no longer wearing it as a hat. It no longer defines you. You exist completely free of it as unconditional peace. Blissmusic Posted June 17, 2010 "Everything in duality is moving. It exists in a constant state of activity. And if you are aware of this constant state of activity instead of engrossed in it, then you experience the bliss of action. Instead of being involved with the objects themselves and their movement, your attention remains on the essence of the objects and movement which is energy itself. Whether physical, mental or emotional it is all energy moving. You enjoy the constant flow of energy as bliss. You remain unattached to the movement and therefore you watch the movement happen as awareness itself as bliss itself as energy itself. You are energy, action arises in energy and disappears in energy all on it's own. There is nothing personal in it. If you can remain in this state of witnessing, in meditation then all action slows down. (If you are engrossed in the action you empower it and it speeds up, but if you remain detached as the witness it slows down.) It is like you turn the fan off and although the fan still spins it loses momentum. Thoughts become more slow and subtle, each burning away in consciousness in a burst of bliss. And then even your heart rate slows down, breathing slows down and may even stop. Any effort to try and do any of this and again you are engrossed in action and exist as ego and separate yourself from awareness. But as the actionless witness it all slows down and even comes to a standstill. That is the point of stillness where you disappear. Only an extremely subtle sense of awareness remains, and everything seems to get reset. When you come out of it, every cell of your being seems to be replenished back to it's natural state of peace. And so when you come out of this stillness even if it was only for a few seconds, everything is fresh and new and alive, everything is radiating peace and love. You can't do it and you can't attain it. But when you rest in a state of automatically giving up everything that arises; in a state of effortless unattachment then it happens. And in this everything stops arising and comes to a stand still. Awareness turns in on itself and disappears into vast limitless consciousness. Blissmusic Posted July 14, 2010 "You learn to remain un-attached to thoughts by first watching how attention attaches to a thought in the first place. You can become aware of that action of attachment. It is very subtle and very fast but if you are fully present in this moment you can watch it happen. The thought arises and then there is a knee jerk action of grabbing that thought, of contracting attention into that thought. Attention is free, the thought arises and then it binds itself to that thought, it takes on the identity of that thought. Attention is no longer attention, free and boundless, it has contracted into a something separate from everything else. It is a feeling of stress. By becoming aware of this action of attaching to thoughts, you can learn to let go of that action. You do not repress it, you simply let it go. You are present enough to remain as attention instead of allowing that knee-jerk reaction to happen. It's like the telephone ringing. The phone rings and automatically you answer the phone. There is an unconscious reaction that says that is what you are supposed to do. But you can simply remain sitting while the telephone rings and eventually it will stop ringing. At first there maybe that pull to answer the phone but with practice, you learn to let that go. In the same way, the thought arises and you let it go. That action of attention attaching to the thought need not happen. In this you can learn to simply rest in a state of un-attachment. Everything arises and disappears in attention itself without affecting attention in any way. Attention remains unbound, formless and in perfect peace. This technique in itself is a way to self realization. Blissmusic Posted August 4, 2010 "Stillness has no position. Stillness is not a quality, an action or a state of being. It does not even exist in the outer world but behind it. Everything arises out of stillness but stillness is unaffected by whatever is arising. So with this you can understand that you cannot still anything in the outer world. Anything that is arising is not meant to be stilled. Thoughts, emotions, actions are all arising and moving according to their own nature. Any trying to control anything creates conflict. It takes you further away from stillness. Even if you try and still your mind, it only pushes you further into mind and away from stillness. But if you allow everything to move and change by itself, then stillness begins to reveal itself. Because if you stop taking a position. If you stop being involved with everything that is moving, if you stop trying to make things a certain way, then automatically, you begin to experience what you really are at your essence. You awaken to stillness, you realize stillness and then you learn to keep coming back to stillness and to remain there for longer periods of time. It becomes your sanctuary, your home. You do not rest there as a person or a name or as definition at all. You rest there as essence as stillness itself. The insanity of the outer world cannot affect it. The outer world cannot exist outside of stillness. But stillness can and does exist outside of the outer world. Blissmusic Posted August 31, 2010 (edited) "The first step in witnessing the mind is to feel. Close your eyes and bring your focus on feeling the sensations in this moment without defining them. Whatever sensations that you notice, allow yourself to feel them. Do this now. Now, from this point of feeling, feel your entire being. Feel the sensation of existing in this moment. Let yourself fully rest in this sensation of existing. Relax into it. Allow breathing to happen, allow thinking to happen but let your attention rest on feeling yourself existing. If you do this, you will notice that this feeling of existing does not have boundaries and does not have a form. It includes everything. Everything that arises arises out of this feeling of being. Nothing needs to be included or excluded because it all arises out of this same feeling of existence. And this feeling of existence is conscious. You cannot separate consciousness and existence. And the more you rest in this feeling, the more subtle and expansive it gets. You can begin to watch thoughts arise and disappear in this consciousness. You do not need to interpret them. They are like books arising. You do not need to open the book and see what is inside, you simply see it as a book and let it go. In this you can begin to experience the thoughts arising as energy. Energy arising in energy and disappearing back into the same formless conscious energy. Energy moving through energy. Very blissful. Blissmusic Posted September 8, 2010 "If you expect something in meditation then you are expecting too much. When you are ready to fall into this moment regardless of the outcome. Because you have exhausted the urge to be something, to attain something to change something to improve yourself or your world. When you give up trying to get it and accept this chaotic mess that you find yourself to be, then meditation embraces you; meditation takes over. You enter a whole new experience of what is real. Devoid of stress and conflict where everything that arises burns blissfully away in consciousness. This is true peace. It does require effort to realize such peace. To try and be effortless without any effort can often just lead to laziness and depression. But when you give it your all, when you dive deep into your spiritual practice and commit to that, at some point in frustration you give up and fall into this moment. You fall and you never stop falling until you see there is nothing there that is falling. There is just consciousness. Then it all makes sense. It makes sense because understanding has fallen away and that is a wonderful freedom. Blissmusic Posted September 15, 2010 "There is a direct method to self realization. And that is to close your eyes and notice what is here beyond all thinking. Beyond any thought there is a subtle experience of existing. You can feel it. If you give your complete focus to this feeling of existing then this feeling expands very quickly. Infinite consciousness that seems asleep inside of you awakens very quickly. But what happens is thinking pulls you out of it. So many thoughts arise to grab your attention and bring you back into thought identification. The mind wants you to remain identified with thoughts. Your attention to your thinking empowers the mind, it is its food. So in order to have your complete focus on the sensation of existing, it is necessary drop every thought that arises like its a hot potato. With intense focus, you ignore the thoughts, your attention is completely turned away from thinking. This is not a technique where witnessing thoughts works because even that requires a certain amount of attention on thinking. So intense is your focus on what is here beyond the mind, that thoughts may not even arise. It requires great intensity because by reflex, you will want to identify with the thoughts. Just like an alcoholic wants a drink: one drink and all the discomfort will go away. Same with thinking. Just let your focus fall back into thinking and all the discomfort and intensity will go away. Because it can be uncomfortable, it can be very intense going completely beyond the mind. And there is a certain pleasure in being lost in thought. But the more you practice, the more it can become passive, the more you can relax into what is beyond the mind. But it is very easy to turn this into mind. To call this feeling of existing beyond thinking 'the self' and then it becomes another experience of the mind, something that you now have defined as an experience and have along with every other experience. So it does require great intensity, great focus to keep turning away from thinking into what is here beyond thought and remaining in what is beyond thought. To even say remaining does not cut it, because it is not a place where you can remain, it is not a thing or a place rather it is the absence of things and places, the absence of everything known, eternally fresh and new. And through intense practice you realize this absence is the light of bliss, you become a light bulb of bliss. Very quickly it can happen this way for one who has the discipline. Blissmusic Posted October 12, 2010 "There are so many teachings about how to be happy. So many teachings on how to get rid of your sadness, your anger how to be successful and confident. How to love yourself, how to think positive. Basically how to mould yourself into this perfect spiritually correct person with the plastic smile and the 5000 friends of facebook. And it's all nonsense. All these quotes that people pass around to psyche each other up are only make believe. They take you further away from what is here. How freeing it is to be naked and alone with all of your imperfections, with all of your lacking, desires and fears and not have to do anything about it. Even to say 'I accept myself as I am' you miss it. You've grabbed hold of another idea and made it you. Because the unfathomable peace and love that envelopes you completely is not something you paint on as a mask. It is not something that you can think your way into that you can attain and accomplish. But rather it is what you are underneath it all. It's not even underneath, it's everywhere but still it is hidden from the mind; it is hidden from those that are still holding on to a certain idea of themselves. So what must happen is the egg must be cracked open. You must let yourself fall into what ever is here and keep falling. You must allow yourself to be broken in this moment so that you immerse yourself in what is behind it all. Even the words must be tossed away. All revelations and knowledge that somehow have been made into a spiritual accomplishment must go. All that is left is beyond words, beyond the mind. You break free of this individual you which really is a prison and you experience what is beyond it, you are immersed in what is beyond it. And what is beyond it? Infinite love, peace, bliss, freedom. Even these words cannot define it. They make it sound like an escape or a drug and it is the opposite of that, it is life that you awaken to. You break free of this illusion of who you have held on to for so long and suddenly it just opens up into vastness. The realization of the infinite. And then you live as your silly imperfect self while feeling the vastness that animates it. Meditation, spiritual practice immersing yourself in the enlightened presence of a Guru or The Calling/Ocean Euphoric CDs, all of these things can move you into the ultimate truth. But all of these hopeful quotes that promise wealth, happiness and prince charming only keep you unaware. Hopelessness is the greatest gift. Because when you realize how alone you are how hopeless you are then automatically your attention is turned towards that which is beyond yourself and you awaken to what you have been looking for all along. Blissmusic Posted October 28, 2010 "You can break it down to two states. The first state is identification with thinking. You believe you are the thinker of your thoughts and the subject of your thinking. You experience this moment through the interpretation of the mind. The second state is that which precedes the first. It is what is here behind the thinking. You feel yourself existing not as a person but as sensation. Resting as consciousness itself, resting as pure being. You can approach meditation by recognizing these two states. By remaining as pure being, letting thoughts go as they arise, keeping your attention resting on the feeling of existing in this moment. And when you do get caught up in thinking and you lose that connection to feeling this moment, you recognize it as a completely different state. You experience the difference between the two states and learn to let go of thinking again and come back into feeling this moment. What often happens is once you experience pure being, the mind defines that experience, describes and memorizes it to be a certain way. And then tricks you into settling for the memory of pure being, the knowledge of pure being. The mind tries to own pure being as another experience of the mind and so pure being is lost. Because pure being is that which precedes the mind, it cannot be owned and it cannot be experienced by the intellectual mind. So in order to rest as pure being, you have to let go of all knowledge and memory and feel this moment as though it is the first time; completely fresh and new. You feel this moment without filtering it through thought without relating it to past experience. And in this way, by resting in pure being without adding anything to it, this bliss of consciousness expands and intensifies. Naturyl Posted October 30, 2010 Well put. Spirituality isn't mere "self-help" psychology. It goes beyond all that - beyond name and form. We ultimately help ourselves most by dissolving our imaginary individual selves in the true Universal Self, or whatever we might want to call it. Tao works for me, or from a more modern perspective, "the numinous" (as Carl Sagan called it).
Blissmusic Posted November 4, 2010 "It is very easy to get caught up in the teachings themselves. To read something written about meditation or enlightenment and then take that on as the truth. But all teachings can ever really do is point you in the right direction. What happens when you get there is beyond understanding. Let's take a meditation technique like watching your thoughts. You can sit down, close your eyes and with practice learn to witness thoughts. But once you actually become a witness to your thoughts and individual identification dissolves, something happens that cannot be explained in words. The best you can say is that meditation takes over. You are no longer meditating, there is only meditation happening and it is completely beyond your control. You have entered or better said disappeared into an entire different realm of experience where the intellectual mind is no longer there to perceive what is happening. When you come out of it, I could ask you to detail your experience but you couldn't explain it. The best you could say is that it was incredibly blissful, because even now you feel that bliss. You know you just entered something miraculous and that your life has changed forever but what that miracle was is beyond understanding. And that is where meditation really begins. It begins where understanding stops. It takes over when you have surrendered the idea that anything could ever truly be understood. Blissmusic Posted December 9, 2010 (edited) "There is a force in this moment; an intense movement of energy. The more aware you become, the more you feel this incessant flow of energy gushing like a tsunami. The tendency is to repress this energy or to get rid of it, usually through chasing and fulfilling desires, or through worry. Even spiritual practice can mistakenly become about trying to control this flow of energy, trying to repress this flow of energy, trying to escape it. So in meditation you learn to recognize this flow and surrender to it. To live in perfect balance and to fully surrender yourself as the controller so that this energy can flow freely. It is the entirety of life itself consuming you, breaking you open, tearing apart your concepts and attachments. A joy so intense it is heartbreaking, flowing through you and as you in this moment, awakening you to its very existence. Stress is created by resisting it, by escaping it, by fighting it in every moment. Because the ego knows it is its undoing. But by being fully conscious of this energy and allowing it to flow unhindered, you awaken to cosmic consciousness. This is what is known as walking the razors edge. Blissmusic Posted December 23, 2010 "The mind works by acquiring knowledge and then judging everything according to that knowledge. The mind turns knowledge into a "supposed to" "This is how I am supposed to be." "This is how life is supposed to be." Unhappiness arises because concepts about life become far more important than how life actually is. And through this process of judgement, you separate yourself from everything else. The constant urge to make things different than they are, trying to mould yourself into being a certain way. All of this building stress on top of stress. The natural spontaneous experience of you that arises new in every moment gets suppressed, gets put down. And so there is this underlying feeling that there is something wrong with you. So meditation could be seen as the method of being real. To become aware of what is really here, what is truly here without trying to change it. It is giving yourself the freedom to reveal yourself exactly as you are beyond your concepts. And so perhaps at first you become aware of all of the judgements. Then you become aware of the emotions underneath, the hurt underneath the psychological, the mental the physical. You become aware of the subconscious, the collective unconscious, the core feeling of separation. You become aware of what seems to be real and in that awareness, the stress that binds you to that layer, that makes you identified with that layer, disappears, and you discover a new truth underneath it. You do this layer after layer until you become aware that there is nothing here but awareness itself. All concepts about spirituality fall away and there is just awareness, there is just life itself animating this body and mind and everything. You are free to be exactly as you are. Blissmusic Posted January 6, 2011 "Bliss is not an emotion or even a state of being. It has nothing to do with outward appearance or personality. The same bliss animates anger, sadness, happiness, and humour. It is the electricity that powers emotions, powers the physical, and the mental. It is in everything and remains also as nothing. When you experience that this same bliss is the underlying current of every experience and non experience, there is incredible freedom. When you fully allow the personality to be exactly as it is while remaining aware you realize your true nature as bliss.
