baloneyx Posted December 20, 2008 Well for those who may not know what scoliosis is, it's a deformation of the spine usually into an "S" like shape (i think its usually an S but I think it can also be like a C ). The "S" is formed from left to right or right to left, just making it clear its not the S all people have from back to front if you know what I mean.  So well I had/have that and I was wondering what kinda treatments you can recommend, it's not too serious a case now and doesn't really effect me I think but if I can fix it 100% somehow why not  I'm looking for a more energy/spiritual type fix, I already wore a back brace when younger and did physiotherapy so I've done what I can physically, so lets have a look if there is anything else that can be done.  So yeah any help is welcome, even if it is some exercise you believe can really help  Thanks
Mak_Tin_Si Posted December 20, 2008 For your problem, I have fixed mine and many people's S spine when I was still teaching kungfu back in 2yrs from now. But now I do not teach it anymore. It is an exercise in the Wu Dang' s kungfu internal art system that can cure the S spine in 49days of good practise. Really amazing and simple.  For the energy and spiritual side, I can say you CANNOT cure this problem.  BUT, I can teach you the way to train when you train under the lineage of Chi in Nature. You will learn the first 49days practise which require you to do the practise in a sitting, cross-leg position. This I will be teaching you how to go through the exercise with energy flowing into the body and the energy will try it's best to fix the S spine for you for the long run. It will not be as easy as doing kungfu, but it is effective too. Just a bit more pain and need your mind to be strong.  S spine are usually due to wrong sitting and standing position. Which create the S spine.   Well for those who may not know what scoliosis is, it's a deformation of the spine usually into an "S" like shape (i think its usually an S but I think it can also be like a C ). Mak_Tin_Si Posted December 20, 2008 The exercise is actually taught only the student of the lineage. You can get into the lineage online, and then I can start teaching you the practise. This practise is for your whole life, which you practise for more than 49days. The 49days cycle is for the first cycle, attunement will be given after enrollment, then you will do this practise to recieve all the energy from the lineage into your body for stage 1.  For you, I will give you some 'extra' exercise to fix up this matter WITH the lineage's basic practise. So that will help you build up a straight back soon.    Cool, Thanks Mak Tin Si  Can you show me the exercise and what I have to do for 49 days? Ok sounds good, but I went to the site but I'm not sure what to do. Where would I sign up and do I have to donate to become and student? "The fee for Enrollment is free but you need to donate an amount of $90.00 to the Temple to create good Karma." Because I can't really do that right now I'm afraid Mak_Tin_Si, sorry
karen Posted December 20, 2008 I think there's a lot you can do on your own first. You might want to look at Esther Gokhale's work, which has reversed scoliosis for many people. She does individual sessions with people using voip programs like Skype, but also you can learn a lot of good techniques just by reading her book. It's pretty cheap considering how comprehensive it is, and you might find used copies on amazon. Usually I don't like learning practical exercises from a book, but this one is done so well. Â I put up a 1-hour video presentation of hers here. Â -Karen

Find a good instructor. Learn Zhan Zhuang (Wuji standing). One of my Sifus has scoliosis. Twenty years ago she bagan studying Tai Chi. Today her scoliosis is under control, her posture good and her Gong Fu is superb.

-Karen Thanks Karen, I had actually watched a fair amount of that presentation when someone posted it recently (I'd guess it was you ), I had to leave and couldnt finish watching it though, I shall see it to the end this time though I'll also probably get the book too, seems like it can help with a lot, I know a few other who may want to read it too if its really effective. But do you think it can really reverse the curve and give me a straight spine, even though I'm already 21?
karen Posted December 20, 2008 But do you think it can really reverse the curve and give me a straight spine, even though I'm already 21? Â Hehe, the perennial question - will it work? Well, the potential is always there, and then it depends on a lot of personal factors. My feeling is that the approach is sound, it's not a major investment, and it can only help. To what extent, you'll find out, and you may need to address the problem from various angles including nutrition, emotional processing, etc. Â In the book is a photo of Esther's husband at age 27 with the worst posture, side by side with a photo of him in his 40's, much improved and looking generally healthier. Â If you like working with the book, you might consider augmenting it with a session with Esther.. or look into osteopathic manipulation. I had scoliosis that I didn't treat until I was in my 30's, but it resolved with osteopathic treatment from a *cranial* osteopath trained in the Sutherland method. That was way before I knew about the Gokhale method. I'm thinking it might have taken less time with the osteopathy if I'd been also working with posture on my own. But you'll see what combination of things works for you. Â -Karen

agharta Posted December 20, 2008 Balloons up the nose seem to be pretty effective for this sort of thing, if you can find a doctor near you who does this. I have actually done the balloons on myself several hundred times ,with excellent results, and I have been guiding another member of taobums in doing this on himself. I don't necessarily recommend doing it on yourself without in-person training. It does take some practice with sticking things up your nose. Ideally you can find a local doctor who does this. Aetherous Posted December 20, 2008 But do you think it can really reverse the curve and give me a straight spine, even though I'm already 21? Â In addition to Karen, I will put in my two cents.... Â Esther Gokhale's book is great. Everyone should be doing it, in my opinion. Â Who knows if it'll straighten your spine, but I know for a fact that it will help greatly. Â The book is cheap, and totally worth it...so I recommend trying it out (in addition to seeing a specialist).
gendao Posted December 20, 2008 I put up a 1-hour video presentation of hers here. -Karen Taijiquan teaches to tuck the tailbone. She advises not to, and let the butt even curve out a bit.  So, which is it? I've always wondered about this?  What exactly is the point of tucking the tailbone, and are there only certain applications it should be done for?
baloneyx Posted December 20, 2008 Thank you very much karen, I shall get the book and start working my way through it I guess thats my bodies 3rd goal now, I wanna do the splits, sit comfortably in full lotus and straighten my back  santiago it would be interesting to come train but I'm a bit far right now, but who knows maybe in the future And what exactly is spinal suspension, can you tell me how to go about this exercise? thanks  agharta you post made me giggle, I had no idea what you were talking about but its a very interesting treatment, but I'm looking for more of a simple home solution right now. If the book and spinal suspension don't do it maybe balloons up the nose will  Thanks for you two cents Scotty, and who knows maybe in the future everyone will be doing it

What exactly is the point of tucking the tailbone, and are there only certain applications it should be done for?  My opinion is that tucking the tailbone is just bad advice that has passed from teacher to teacher. I saw a Taiji book that advised to keep the feet parallel and allow the pelvis to float however is most natural. I think this is the best advice. When the feet are slightly turned outwards, the pelvis tucks too far underneath...and when the feet are too far in, the butt sticks out too much. Of course other anatomical abnormalities come into play too though.  I think all internal teachers tend to agree to straighten the spine...it seems Esther's work does this in a healthy way. Her version of standing rocks, in my opinion! My experience with tucking the pelvis underneath is that it's too forced.  There is the concept of "sung"...or dropping tension...that we have to keep in mind. If we're forcefully standing or doing taiji, how can we drop the tension of the body. The posture should be neutral and balanced, so that the tension sinks.  I don't do taiji but this is my opinion based off of experience with zhan zhuang.  The idea of tucking the tailbone is not so much bad advice as it is misunderstood advice. Tucking the tailbone is not forcibly jamming one's hips forward. That is just replacing one tension with another tension.  What should be happening is a release or a letting go. While maintaining intention in relaxed suspension from the Bai Hui (crown point at top of head), open the ankles, the knees and the hips -- the "tucking" will happen on its own. This is basic Zhan Zhuang.
gendao Posted December 21, 2008 Actually, it's not just tucking the tailbone...but Taijiquan posture also includes hollowing the chest and rounding the back. But does agree with straightening the upper spine in general and tucking the chin. Â One possibility might be that tucking the tailbone eases the MCO. However, to do this without physical tension...one may have to open their kwa first. Otherwise, it may not be worth the trade-off. Perhaps like full-lotus position in meditation. It might be better to do it than not...but better not to than to if it creates too much physical tension? Â I still dunno...just throwing out ideas, here. Aetherous Posted December 21, 2008 Actually, it's not just tucking the tailbone...but Taijiquan posture also includes hollowing the chest and rounding the back. But does agree with straightening the upper spine in general and tucking the chin.  Yep, true. You see a lot of old masters with what looks like pretty bad posture. Their skill might be great, but is it necessary to damage yourself? Maybe there's a better way to develop the same level of skill?  FofBEedm80o  One possibility might be that tucking the tailbone eases the MCO. However, to do this without physical tension...one may have to open their kwa first. Otherwise, it may not be worth the trade-off. Perhaps like full-lotus position in meditation. It might be better to do it than not...but better not to than to if it creates too much physical tension?  There may be some energetic reason to it. Tucking seems (to me) to fill the lower dantien. I agree that it's a lot like the full lotus predicament...perhaps not as big of a deal, but the same idea. My opinion is that we should focus on our health first, rather than just push through without listening to the body. So if we're experiencing pain in our back or hips, maybe we're doing something wrong.  I think opening the legs and feet, the kwa, unwinding the belly, developing proper posture and alignment, etc...should all be done instead of (what I consider) crude methods like tucking the pelvis.  For health, the body should move freely like a little kid. There should be no pain, and no unhealthy habitual patterns. For skill in anything, the body needs to move as a unit in a specific way. Can we have both? I think it's possible. Mak_Tin_Si Posted December 24, 2008 Â This Fu is a pain stopper FU which give you effect of stopping the pain, but it will not cure the problem totally. You can give this a try if you want to do it. It is for burning and drinking.

Aetherous Posted December 25, 2008 Not sticking the butt out, but relaxing all tension in proper posture. The butt will naturally NOT tuck under if you're standing right. Â Just my opinion.
