I think rednecks may be the best-equipped to survive any future shortages.

They all love to hunt & fish regularly. They have all the know-how and gear. They can kill game, gut, cut & store it. Many even raise some livestock too.

While they may get mocked and looked down upon by snobby liberals, their off-grid, backwoods lifestyles and skills may actually give them the last laugh...

A Country Boy can Survive (Hank Williams Jr. 1982)

The preacher man says its the end of time

and the Mississippi River she's a going dry.

The interest is up and the stock markets down

and you only get mugged if you go downtown.

I live back in the woods you see,

my woman, and the kids and the dogs and me.

I got a shotgun and a rifle and a four wheel drive

and a countryboy can survive. Country folks can survive.

I can plow a field all day long,

I can catch catfish from dusk til dawn.

Make our own whiskey and our own smoke too

aint to many things these boys can't do.

We grow good old tomatoes and homemade wine

and countryboy can survive, country folk can survive.

Because you can't stomp us out and you can't make us run,

cause we're them ole boys raised on shotguns.

We say grace and we say mam

amd if you aint into that we don't give a damn.

We came from the West Virginia coal mine's

and the Rocky Mountains and the Western skies

and we can skin a buck, we can run a trout line

and a countryboy can survive, country folks can survive.

I had a good friend in New York City

he never called me by my name just hillbilly.

My Grandpa taught me how to live off the land

and his taught him to be a business man

He used to send me pictures of the Broadway Nights

and i would send him some homemade wine

but he was killed by a man with a switchblade knife,

for forty three dollars my friend lost his life.

I'd love to spit some beechnut in that dudes eyes

and shoot him with my ole forty-five

cause a countryboy can survive, country folks can survive.

'Cause you can't stomp us out and you can't make us run,

and we're them ole boys raised on shotgun.

We say grace, we say mam,

if you aint into that we don't give a damn.

We're from North California and South Alabam'

and little towns all around this land.

We can skin a buck, and run a trout line

and a countryboy can survive,

country folks can survive,

countryboy can survive,

country folks can survive.

Very true.

What us intelligent Taobums need to do is get with the rednecks, and put our brains together! They can shoot the deer, and we can get the raw milk and ginseng. It will be a party like no other!

But yeah seriously, it's true that rednecks have the upper hand. Living off the land is the best skill set to have any time, any where.

Whether it's elitist pride or 'country' pride... it's all pride and creates division. If the sht hits the fan, the last thing on anyones mind should be "HAH I told you so!!". We'll have bigger issues at hand... maybe helping each other instead of boasting over who is better or gets "the last laugh" will be more important... survival isn't all about competition, it's about making things work and using each other's strengths to keep it all going.

We need blue and white collar jobs equally and a little less finger pointing in my opinion.

Living off the land is the best skill set to have any time, any where.

Survival:

No air - 3 min

No shelter - 3 hours

No water - 3 days

No food - 3 weeks

No love - 3 months

Know how to make shelter from environmental conditions, this includes making fire.

Know where your natural water sources are in your area. Learn how to find water.

Know how to obtain food from original sources. Learn how to gather or hunt.

Learn how to love the land and the people it supports. Most people are many steps away from their primary food sources. The goal is to reduce those steps, and if need be function at a rudimentary level of production and process. This might mean learning how to make bread from wheat you've ground yourself instead of buying bread.

Also, as a primary means of transfering information, talk to as many friendly people face to face on common ground as possible, if the electricity goes out, there is no such thing as tv, it was all in someones head. There are many examples of the ferocity of depravity that exists when the masses are not fed. Live together. Die alone.

Survival skills are useful in emergencies, and IMO brilliant for getting back in touch with reality, but this is not where civilization is going to go long term obviously! Living off the land is great, but as a lifestyle could not support many people. Living near a farm or two... that's very smart. Especially if they are organic/permaculture. But there are going to be more and more local truck farms plying the cities as well.

All best wishes,
