Ron Goninan Posted February 27, 2009 Can you give a brief history or introduction to White Crane for those of us unfamiliar with it? * From a lecture delivered by Great Master Ruan Dong to Ron Goninan: "About four hundred years ago, in Qing Dynasty China, Crane style Boxing was founded by a nun, called Fang Qiniang. She used to learn South Shaolin boxing from Yong Chun Town of Fuzhou Fujian. Someday while she was washing clothes by the river, she saw white crane acting near her, then she got this afflatus and created Crane style Boxing. This boxing since that time continue growing fast and fast, there are four major Crane styles nowadays, such as Flying-Crane, Calling-Crane, Resting-Crane and Eating-Crane. I am an important person of the third inheritors of Calling-Crane Style. About Calling-Crane Boxing, there are more than ten forms, which have not included push-hand forms, practice forms and weapon forms. The very basic form 'BaBulian' we so call that Eight-Step Form. Then this form has got three routines from low level to high level. Another main form is the 'ErShiBaBu' the 28-step form, which contain both crane style and shaolin style together is quite different comparing to other Crane styles. Calling-Crane boxing also including high stance routines, middle high stance routines and low stance routines etc. For the weapon forms, which very few remaining until now, many have lost, only some stuff forms few masters can play". Arising from the traditions of Fuzhou our White Crane characterized by unique breathing techniques used to express energy. It uses rapid, intricate swirling hand movements combined with delicate jumps and the calling sounds of the White Crane. Our White Crane patterns place emphasis on the powerful breathing that gives the style its name and coordinating breathing with hand movements, delivering powerful strikes with lightning speed. What makes White Crane an advanced art is found within its energy.
